Aberdeen has been developing a combined heat and power (CHP) system for some time.

It seems to work well, but because it wasn't metered some people took the proverbial. I have visited people in a multi-storey where going into their flat was like entering a sauna. They kept it uncomfortably warm just because they could.

Even if you have your own woodland, that wood isn't really ''free'' - because:

    1. You could be selling that wood to someone else.
    2. You could be selling your labour to someone else - instead of collecting the wood.
    3. You could sell the woodland.

So there's an opportunity cost there.

Even if you just take the wood from someone else's woodland - number 2 still applies.
Unless I missed it, Dafty didn't say his wood was free.

However, if someone enjoys having land, its maintenance is normally part of that, and those who choose to own trees/ woodland wouldn't necessarily want to work for someone else or become part-time log merchants.

Think of it like a hobby.

I cannot for the life of me understand why most folk are just happy to pay £1000 or more per year on heating and mostly ignore the EPC rating and energy costs when buying a new house. Nobody will buy a fridge unless it is an A++ energy rating, so why are consumers not refusing to buy any new house that does not have an EPC rating of A?

Funny that, because I purchased a fridge the other month. My deciding factors were (i) reliability and (ii) what it looks like. I didnt know its EPC rating then and I still dont, hell, I dont even know what EPC stands for.
