Problem with new cheque imaging and Joint account

My wife has had a very unpleasant experience with the new cheque imaging clearance system in Halifax bank. We have a Halifax joint account and recently when in a local branch she paid in a cheque using the new imaging system. She was helped by one of the staff who explained that it would clear in a shorter time and paid in the cheque made out to her into our joint account using her debit card. Today I had a letter from Halifax explaining that the deposit had failed a validation check ! with the note 'payee does not match account'. This is somewhat surprising as we have paid in a great number of cheques in single names before, but I am guessing this is to do with the new imaging clearance system. We phoned the helpline who explained that the cheque needs to have a payee matching the account name ie in both our names !? well thats a new one. They couldn't explain why the letter came just to me as she made the deposit. They are asking us to go to the local branch with a new cheque (helpdesk says the cheque was destroyed, the letter say they are returning it) and deposit it again. This cant be correct surely ?

I’ve got a joint Halifax account and have deposited cheques in both individual names using cheque imaging without any problem.
Though I used the imaging feature in the Halifax app which meant I retained the original cheques and wouldn’t have had a problem if any of them had been refused.====0 -
The worst part though is that you do not get the cheque back - you will have to get a new one.
I certainly not be using these machines until they get it sorted - mine was declined because it was written in Welsh!0 -
That sounds awful! Why on earth would they destroy the cheque? If the machine simply misread the cheque would it also be destroyed? What a stupid system.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Credit Cards, Savings & investments, and Budgeting & Bank Accounts boards.
