Will Plusnet be slower than Talk Talk?

I've been with Talk Talk forever, so a bit hesitant about switching but using the MSE broadband checker tool means it'll be cheaper with Plusnet.
An article I read quoted recent data published by Ofcom which suggests Plusnet is outperforming TalkTalk and offering a faster broadband service.
Now advertised speed of Plusnet is 10mb whilst Talk Talk is 11mb. Having gone through the online application process and entering my details, Plusnet are now telling me my estimated download speed is 4 - 9Mb. I don't know that actual speed I currently get on average with TalkTalk.
I definitely don't want to go any slower! Anyone switched and noticed a difference for the better/worse in broadband speed?

All other things being equal it shouldn't make any difference who the provider is. Plusnet is owned by BT who run it as a separate business.
Plusnet do tend to quote lower than you can actually receive on ADSL for whatever reason but you're not going to notice a massive difference between 9Mb and 11Mb for most internet browsing purposes.
Run speed tests while you're connected to TalkTalk to see what you get now (but not over a wireless connection to the router - must be a wired connection) and then see what you get.0 -
do a couple of speedtests and check but I'd guess they'll be similar and/or negligible difference, I didn't notice any difference between various providers (until I changed to fibre)0

Plusnet and TalkTalk use the same physical telephone cables. This means the speeds you get with each provider will be very close.0

Tinkywinks 108 Its interesting reading your comments on broadband speeds.
I am currently looking for a new deal and several providers I have checked out ‘Plusnet, SSE’ all say round about 10 to 11mb but when I put my address in all return a speed of around 2 to 5mb which is absolute pants. I also noticed one provider stated they only have to guarantee some thing like 1.7mb is that true?
My current provider is EE and I get on average 11mb download and 1mb upload.
I personally think all these providers are just covering their backs, I struggle to believe changing provider would crash my speed to that level.
By the way, are you planning to go to plusnet via the MSE link if so read my thread on Plusnet broadband deal.I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.0 -

The average speed both Plusnet and Talk Talk quote have nothing to do with the speed you will get , even if coincidentally the speed they quote is close to what you will get,
if you live close to the exchange ( for ADSL) or close to the cabinet ( for FTTC ) you will get faster speed than if you live further away, this is true regardless of provider, obviously the distance remains the same when you change provider ,both 'systems' they operate are built to the same technical specifications so why would the speed be different ?
As already said , if you move between providers , and you purchase the same product from the new provider, then unless you had a fault with the old provider , then the speed the new provider delivers will be pretty much the same unless they connect you with 'faulty' equipment, so the connection speed you get almost certainly will be the same with the new provider...there may be differences with peak time 'throughput' but that's not what the figures quoted refer to0 -
Plusnet are part of BT and when I was with them my average speed was 48Mbps done on the speed checking service. If you have Netflix or Amazon Prime and use the films section you need about 2.5Mb to get a buffer-less service.Someone please tell me what money is0

Yes I'm pretty sure Plusnet only guarantee 1.7mb, but like you say, I think they are covering their back. But from what the others on this thread are saying, if you get 11mb with EE then you should get the same with any other provider.
Yes I'll be going via MSE to get the Plusnet deal and I saw your thread...I didn't complete it but applied and the deal seemed to go through for me. Very strange - have you figured out why yet?0 -

I asked Plusnet yesterday about the speed quoted, and they also mentioned it would depend on how near I lived to the exchange and I thought, well surely Talk Talk use the same exchange?! So glad to see it confirmed here, thank you.0 -
You also need to factor in that OFCOM introduced new rules that you may leave any ISP if they cannot get your speed up to the minimum(guaranteed) speed quoted within 30 days of you reporting an issue. (only applies to new contracts)
The code is voluntary but Plusnet/TalkTalk/BT are among the people who signed up for it.
So it isn't in an ISPs favour to over estimate the minimum speed.0 -
The cheap end suppliers are much the same complaints about xx complaints about ss .
Its more than just distance as it also depends upon the quality of the cable to your house .0
