Charging teens rent....

  • No kids myself, but I have a colleague who has 2 sons in their mid twenties. Both still live with her, pay no rent, no bills, no food contribution, she does their laundry, they both work full time and seem to be constantly needing to be bailed out financially - one recently had a car taken off him because he couldn’t keep up the lease payments, so she’s now bought him an old car. She’s always complaining she’s skint from looking after them. Personally I think she has dug herself into a hole by covering all their housing related costs and chores, and neither of them seems to understand financial responsibility.

Yep, I thunk this is a big concern in society.

Children (no longer the age of a child) stay at home temporarily, until all of a sudden they are in their mid twenties, dependent, and it starts to feel a bit awkward and strange. Parents have no time to themselves and the kids don't have room to grow. I certainly want my freedom again I don't need my children to keep me company, that's a bit of a big ask on the children. And all in the name of saving for a deposit.

My parents took money for "my keep" as they called it back then, but it was ridiculously cheap, and only payable while I was earning.

I advise my students, if they live at home while a student, apprentice or employee to pay their parents whatever they ask for their keep - and it mustn't be begrudged, grumbled or argued about; it'll be the best bargain they'll ever have.

I've never heard of anyone being charged market rent values by their parents.

And I never play them that corny Tammy Wynette choon- you all know the one I mean (although teenagers wouldn't).
