Why would it take the seller 14 DAYS to clear the contents of a flat?? And I thought she was flying abroad 2 days after your original agreed completion date? There is something strange going on here .... I think you're right not to trust her.
  • The whole episode does had one good point tho' - it's been a useful training lesson for your GF !

    And for me!

    Hi, Ghekkomanic,

Been following this thread for a while, I think you should stick at it. you have come this far don't give up yet and you might get it on exactly your terms or close enough.

Its too easy for people who have not invested the time and effort as you have in this particular property buying process to say pull out.

I think if it really is what you wanted then don't give up too easily over a grand here or there as its a bit silly really.

My thoughts on the furniture is tell her to keep it. I mean £2500 is a lot of money and you could furnish a house from new with that much and the sales will be upon us soon so you could grab some bargains totally to your taste.
  • Just spoke to the estate agent. She says she just found out that the seller is buying another property in the UK to develop, and that she needs the money from our sale for the deposit! Apparently she is looking to complete soon. This was from a different estate agent based further north. Surely she needs to make this sale?

    Confused now!

    +1

OP, aim for your original price, no furniture and her completion date.

Put a deadline on your offer and if that expires with no sale then walk away.

... and use that to your advantage.

Me too, actually. You seem to have the seller over a barrel and may get the flat for a much better price than you thought. It's not going to cost you anything to stick around for a few days if your GF is doing the conveyancing.

Look around at other options in the meantime of course. I would just repeat what someone said earlier in the thread and arrange the exchange & completion for after she leaves, if this is actually what she is doing.

I've also been following this for a while.

I'd play the seller. You're in a no lose situation. If you mentally write-off the purchase, make rental arrangements etc ........ then you can play hardball with the seller - it really doesn't matter to you.

Certainly stick to the original price, the £500 for furniture ( if you want it ). When you approach exchange date, demand :
    - Exchange & completion same date.
    - Your inspection of flat on that date before exchange/completion
    - Drop you price by a couple of thousand due to 'unforeseen circumstances'

If they say '!!!!!! off', so what, you've already mentally detached, and walk away.

You've made your demands - you have to stick it out at least for the reply!

If she originally agreed the price, she can afford to sell at that price. If she needs the money for a deposit, you've got her royally over a barrel now.

She pushed it too far. Let her pay the consequence. Walk away if she refuses but I would ride it for a little bit longer.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Thank you Doozergirl, Somerset, chriseast, irnbru and Millionaire.

I want to hang in and see this through, am relieved some of you feel the same. Am having a drink with my GF after work and am hoping to avoid another row about this - so, good to know I'm not in the minority view!

We are looking at other places so can afford to lose this, but at the moment the evidence suggesting seller will not pull out is:

    1. She quit her job two months ago
    2. I'm told she has booked her and boyfriend's flights abroad for December (although she can still sell the flat if she's abroad I guess)
    3. She needs money from this for other property

I'm going to expect this to fall through. Then if it happens (I'll stick to the lower prices and not negotiate) it will be a pleasant surprise.

[Unless she hides some seafood under the floorboards]
