Spanish speeding ticket payment

I received a recorded delivery letter saying I had incurred a speeding fine while in Spain 4 months ago. It is directing me to a website sct.myfines.eu to pay online. As with anything like this I am trying to do my due diligence that the site is legitimate but can't find any information. I have seen a few posts directing people to another spanish site but not this one. Does anyone have any experience of this site?

Thanks

Was it a Spanish speed camera ? I know in France they charge around 100 euros on the spot cash fines to speeding overseas drivers but i am not sure about Spain.
  • British law dictates that a speeding notice must be received by the registered owner of the vehicle within 14 days of the offence being committed.

I cannot see that the Spanish government can ignore that - especially in Britain. But they might be able to arrest you if you go back there.

The British law in question applies only to certain offences specified in Schedule 1 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988, so yes, the Spanish can happily ignore it.

So you don't think that Spanish law should apply in Spain? That's an interesting viewpoint to take.

Section 1, Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988. For certain road traffic offences the driver must be given a warning that he faces prosecution. ... Common offences requiring a NIP include: dangerous driving, careless driving, speeding and disobeying traffic signs and traffic signals. The NIP must be served on the registered keeper within 14 days of the offence.

If the above applies, how on earth could he be prosecuted in this country by another country if the law of this country has not been carried out?

  • The site looks / feels unofficial. Whilst they've gone to the trouble of buying a certificate, the WHOIS for the domain links back to an Italian domain name provider, with a privacy protection for the buyer. Not what you would expect a government department / QUANGO to do. And too little information on the landing page, with Italian snippets...

Also, were you, in fact, in Spain four months ago, and specifically on the date of the offence they ought to have detailed? If you were, and this is fake, you might want to ask DVLA who has asked for your name / address based upon your registration recently... as DVLA must be selling this to whoever is initiating the fake notice.

BT seems to be blocking access to this site, least I can't access it.

So more than likely a scam.
