I am thinking of investing quite a few £1000 with Kaupthing. I am concerned about some gloomy reports about the risks attached to any Icelandic bank, particularly this one it seems from some "experts". Should I avoid them?

I have now cleared my first payment into the KE account so no problems.

This has gone round the buoy a few times. They are FSA covered up to the £35K mark so as long as you do not go over that, there is no risk to your savings.

Sorry but this question is being done to death elsewhere on the forum. Please Read the existing threads on this issue.

Thanks for posting that Patr100! This thread has lost it's way somewhere with all those "is my bank safe?" questions. Please let us stick to the theme of the thread and that is The Top Instant Access Savings... That's all I want to see here IE whats new on the block and who is offering the best deals and other forum members experiences with them. Any bank safety worries should be kept for the other threads, or is that being too harsh?

No. That is how things should work.
Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.

Can I please have a little advice from some of the more experienced members of the board.

We are currently aiming to be debt free. Two of the loans we have have heavy penalties fr overpaying on a mothly basis so we aim to save monthly and then clear each loan in turn when we are in a position to clear them.

We are looking for an account that allows us to deposit varying amounts between £50 and £1000 per month over the next 18 months and then for savings towards a new home.

Surely if money laundery is a problem then it is not up to me to prove I am not it is them to prove I am and they are welcome.

Interesting that because as a new customer I was able to open an e-saver account online and deposit £75k on it without any question being asked!!! It looks like they don't treat their customer too well...
If you can't spend it then save it!

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for a medium-term savings account to put about 3.5k into? I HAVEN'T used my ISA allowance this year, but I'm not a taxpayer as my income is only about 3k pa (kept woman - hubby works!). I already have a lump sum in NS&I which is giving me a bit of an income, so if interest was only paid annually it wouldn't be the end of the world, but monthly would be great. I bank with FD, but I suspect they aren't the best bet for savings... it may be that I just need to bung it in NS&I, but dunno!

Internet only is OK, 30 day notice also OK.

    Thanks for any advice/help!

Kaupthing edge are internet only and pay 6.5%AER and monthly interest if you are happy to go with an overseas bank - they are Icelandic-there are also some decent rates for fixed terms if you would prefer - take a look at moneysupermarket.co.uk or moneyfacts.co.uk

Sorry to be a bit obvious but you could do worse than follow Martins advice. ie click the tab at the top of this page saying Banking Saving and follow it through to the savings advice and best buys.
