This one of my pet hates. You have an online account. You want to open another account with the same institution. Can you simply do it with one click from within the online banking application? In the vast majority of cases the answer is a resounding no. They obviously don't want to make it too easy for customers to switch into a better paying account. In fact, what it does is encourage me to switch to a different provider altogether. Which I probably wouldn't do for a small fraction of a percent if it was easy to open a new account with the existing provider.

Me too only Alliance and Leicester are playing fast and loose with me.I have direct saver acc and my wife. They have opened E Saver acc paying more interest but I cannot open e-saver after applying 4th march had to send id details etc still heard nothing. Rude people at customer service tell you they are busy and you will have to be patient. One young lady who I asked to afford me the courtesy of just listening to me and not talk constantly over me told me having quite a substantial sum in one of their accts was not important and eventually hung up on me.
needless to say where are we going now?" Kaupthing "who are most helpful and kind, being also speedily efficient
We have chosen icesave for our Isa's they are also helpful and efficient.
  • Having recently opened an E-saver with A&L I can't say they are the most efficient. Shortly after opening the account I decided to open a Premier Direct current account with them as transfer between the accounts are quicker. I phoned them to advise of my decision and was told no problem, just give us the e-saver account number once opened. I am now being told that I have to close completely the e-saver and re-open another one if I want to change linked account!!! When you see how long it takes for any credit to clear I am reluctant to proceed with the change.

Talking more generally I would like some advice please. I have maxed out my e-saver account so interest (about £300/month) is paid into the linked account. I then transfer the money into an Plus Saver A&L account currently paying 5.5% gross, where I have also deposited another £30k. The rate seems ok but interest is paid only once a year.
Do you think my set up is ok, and should I switch to a monthly interest paying account ?
If you can't spend it then save it!

My concern for this might be the amount of money you hold with A&L.

They aren't the strongest bank at the minute, you might consider splitting your savings between several institutions in order to be protected IF any problems occur.
    8,000 / 10,000 saved. Another 2,000 by April 2011!
  • thanks,this post was a great help.

You got me worried. Is there a way I can monitor the bank's health? I would prefer not to have to open a vast number of accounts as it is a pain in the back side to do so and then administer them.

From my experience to have accounts with so many banks in the past, no doubt A&L is the worst of all.
Their online system is crap, customer services are rubbish.
You can not expect to get much help from their branch either.
    Vodafone sucks.

I take it you're not keen on A&L then?

AGREED I have /had direct saver acct I have been trying to open E-Saver acct since 4th March.Latest is yesterday received my docs back they had asked for as proof of ID.
comment we cannot open account as these documents have not been authenticated.I rang up customer nonservice and was told I had to take them to a person of upstanding to have them signed etc etc
Anyway although I have had account and having interest paid monthly into my linked acct matters not they don't believe I am me and I must be proved all over again only double this time.
Surely if money laundery is a problem then it is not up to me to prove I am not it is them to prove I am and they are welcome.
NO problems with Kaupthing edge who have now got my cash and today Post Office has a good enough offer on so up yours All/Lr and that other one Coventry b/s I have got sick of you too

Hi, my boyfriend and I would like a joint on-line savings account to both access when we have a little spare cash. We are currently saving for a joint purchase which will be made in the summer, but would like to keep the account open for further joint purchases. Is there an account available out there to do this?
    many thanks
    Elfy

Open 2 individual accounts with Kaupthing; it can link to your joint current account.

I am thinking of investing quite a few £1000 with Kaupthing. I am concerned about some gloomy reports about the risks attached to any Icelandic bank, particularly this one it seems from some "experts". Should I avoid them?
