  • I found opening an account with Kaupthing Edge simple and straightforward. And their customer help line was answered in seconds from a UK call centre. I am not worried by the apparent "unsafeness" of this Icelandic bank as it is regulated and insured by the UK Government. And my savings will never reach £35000!

  • I opted for annual interest to be applied rather than monthly interest when I opened a Bradford and Bingley esaver last June. I didn't intend to make any withdrawals during the first year, although this wasn't a requirement of the account anyway. I'm now in the position where I have to withdraw half of the money after 9 months. Will I still get interest for the first 9 months based on the original £2,000 that was in there? Or do I just get interest for the full year based on the £1,000 that will be my balance in June?

I would be very surprised if it is anything other than calculated on a daily basis and just applied annually.
Otherwise you could have the minimum in the account for 11 months and transfer a load of cash in at the end of the year to get the full annual interest.

Yes its compounded daily so you will get 9 months interest on your 2000.
By the way B & Bs method of paying low interest while appearing to pay high is to change the name of there best account once every three months or so and then move all other accounts down a bit. Don’t know which esaver you have but esavers (1) to (4) are all on the back burner as is internet saver (1) we are now on to internet saver (2). They will need a new name in about 6 months once internet savers (3) and (4) have been relegated. How about Transitory saver (1).
Seriously if I were you I would take out the lot and read Martins article to find out where the clever money is invested.

Thanks for the advice,. I'm clued up on spending money and moving debts around, but not used to having savings!
  • Would anyone care to offer an opinion on the advisability of opening new savings accounts with Ice or Kaupthing given the disturbing news reported here:-
