Problem I have with Tandem is to log in to the app you have to put your mobile number in to receive a text to log in to my account, or am I doing something wrong?
That's how it works for me too. It's a bit concerning as the text arrives on the same device as the app. Which makes me wonder about security. Although I do have to unlock the Tandem app with a fingerprint.
Yes, that's the way it works for me too. Make sure that you have notifications off on locked screen for security, just to be on the safe side. Can't use fingerprint due to eczema on hands, it never works for me, so have given up.
I'm becoming increasingly concerned about the security of these banking apps. So much so that I am minded to buy another mobile phone for which to use for banking only. I am uneasy about having a device with banking apps on it out and about with me just in case I should put it down somewhere. So I am minded to have a phone that I can leave at home and this would contain all of the banking apps.

Well that's one way I suppose. Bear in mind, that with some of these banking apps like Tandem and Zopa, that money can only be withdrawn to your nominated account(s), so hopefully a bit of peace of mind there.

Tandem is one of the savings apps which only allow withdrawals to (and deposits from) current accounts in your name. This is an extra layer of security.

Your phone, and all its apps and data are more secure than your PC/laptop - provided you adhere to simple security provisions, such as a device and a SIM lock, and not displaying texts on the lock screen. Granted, it's easier to lose a mobile than a PC/laptop as you take it out of the house but how often do you lose your mobile, and what use would your mobile be to anyone who might find it?

Does this make any sense at all to anybody?
If the text can be sent only to the registered number, why do they ask to enter the number?
If it can be sent to any number what's the point in sending it?

I use a tablet and only have to use a mobile code when I power it up, after that it allows finger print recognition
Only had the app for an hour or so and it does seem there is a problem using it if installed in the Secure Folder of a Samsung phone, unable to use fingerprint to unlock. No problem if installed in "open" area.

Might be similar to Barclays app which also doesn't play well with Samsung.

    I share your concern.

A friend of mine was drugged (and effectively abducted) on a night out in London, and his accounts are cleared out using his finger print.

He was lucky.  The bank reimbursed him.

I had my banking apps on a spare phone until it got to the point they no longer worked on an old operating system.

A dreadful experience. You can disable biometric logins, but if someone holds a knife to my throat, I'm sure I'll give them my password. Thankfully what you've described is pretty rare.

You can use the app on any device. The text goes to the registered phone.

The mobile number is effectively your username.
They ask you to enter it, in the same way as other apps ask for your username.

The app seems to hold little persistent data, so you need to fully login quite frequently.
