Think about popping an inexpensive SSD in there; https://www.mymemory.co.uk/integral-120gb-p-series-5-sata-iii-ssd-drive-560mb-s.html
Available for as little as £18 delivered.
Will transform it's performance for a relatively small outlay. Very easy to fit.0 -
I talked you through registry hacking.
Please dont refer to editing the registry as 'hacking'
It is not hacking in any way shape or form - the registry is a hierarchical database of windows settings . Editing it is changing those settings
This might be a moneysaving website, but there are a good number of technically skilled people on here .. And if you keep throwing words like 'hacking' around, you will lose credibility pretty quickly

Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.0 -

Just a figure of speech AndyPix and used heavily no matter what IT discipline you work in, coding or else, and no offense meant to anyone. Quasar was really happy that my use of the word got him out of a big hole and that's what matters.0 -

Yes - it is used heavily where hacking is involved - Otherwise it is used incorrectly, as it was in your case0 -
No - changing code means changing code - and in any case, no code was changed here, some registry values were changed

Also in the coding fraternity, especially when they have to change code in a program. And no I didn't use the word incorrectly. At least my efforts and post's for Quasar positively helped him. But I note you don't like the use of the word, let's move on.0 -

I code in many languages and on many platforms and 'we' definitely do not refer to code change as hacking.
Nothing was hacked here - the registry editor was used as it was designed to be used and settings were changed. By your logic, changing the screen resolution using the control panel would be classed as hacking !!
Anyway , I appreciate your sentiment and a job well done.
Id just prefer it if used correct terminology so as to not scare away the less tech savvy.
Some may shy away from performing a task suggested if 'hacking' is involved - whereas if we are just editing the registry then it doesn't sound so daunting if you know what I mean..
By the way, it might be worth putting the post back up that actually includes the fix - that way anyone with a similar issue in future who comes across this thread can benefit from its content :beer:0 -
I often use the word "hacking" as in "hacking my brain", ie. learning to do something in a new way, or "life-hacking", ie. finding ways to do things that make my life easier.
Incidentally, I'm using the very same laptop that last night caused me woe. All's well that ends well.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

Thanks for this. I think I'll wait for the next laptop failure, since it is so old anyway, then invest in a new one. My desktop is my main computer anyway.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

Thank you AndyPix your point has been well and truly noted and I will be mindful in any future post's of using such terminology , less tech savvy in mind.
On the post I took down, I did that so that I could talk Quasar through a System Restore first, and also because she had stated she was not that techie. Turns out that by the time post's and timing Quasar had already done what I had suggested with the Registry and her old lappy was up and running.
I also decided to direct her to a site with the exact process, shown in picture format as well as it was going to be much easier, in my view, than talking through the whole process over what would have been a disjointed conversation.
If it helps I can put that link back up on the post and I agree that it would be useful for others in future who might come across the same issue.
