Another example is DRN4372549 - this one is actually a decision about Monzo. Same thing, same story.

Being pedantic, but the bank did not keep the funds in that case.
Monzo told Mr O it has the right under the terms and conditions to close an account at any time. It said it had made the decision to close his account and the balance of the account has been returned to the originating bank for the transaction in question.

Just because they haven't mentioned where the funds are going doesn't mean that they are holding on to them ;-).

If they are going back to the OP, he'll be informed. Otherwise he may or may not be told.

It says what happened to the funds in my quote from the ombudsman decision you referred to, they were returned to the originating bank.

My comment was about this thread, not the case. As in - the OP has not been told where the money has gone / is going - and might never be told - but that doesn't actually mean that Monzo is keeping it.

You are right it's different in that in that decision the person was told where the money went though. Maybe when the OP gets a FOS decision they will mention where the money has gone to? Not going to be of much help if they do though.

I was only referring to the decision in the post I quoted.

Though in the case of the OP, as the money came from family I’m sure they can resolve it with the sender to send again/get in an alternative manner.

Does anybody have some real hard facts rather than speculation about what a bank is allowed to do

what I know is that a bank is allowed to suspend an account if they need to do an investigation and that they do not need to tell the account holder why it is suspended Indeed in some cases they are legally obliged not to tell them

however once their enquiries are complete and assuming that they do decide to close the account what is the legal position regarding funds in the account

I do not know the answer to that
