Maybe, I don't have any experience of referrals, so I couldn't comment on how common it is to ask for money.
It's uncommon to ask for money ("pay me £X and I'll use your referral"), but very common for people offering money to those who pick their referral over dozens of others ("if you use my referral I'll split the money I received with you"). It's the person switching the account that does most of the leg-work so I find offers where the referrer gets half/most of the incentive quite unbalanced. This can be addressed through referral swapping. Presumably where referral-splitting is banned on the referrer's board it is because the company has contacted MSE and objected. This is what leads to people asking by PM.

Thinking beyond Santander, there are a number of offers I simply wouldn't have bothered with if I didn't receive a top-up from the person referring me. It just so happened that I had 5 accounts to switch for this offer and could make 5 referrals myself, so it worked out perfectly.

I am shocked by some of the mercenary and frankly
greedy attitudes on this thread. Yes, referral deals sometimes offer incentives to use referrals, but that has normally been for cash and is clear up front. In this current deal you are each gaining £50 of gift vouchers - if you have to pay for the privilege then, unless you have an immediate need then the deal is costing one party actual money.

Without someone kindly offering you their RAF code (whether it would go unused or not), you don't gain £50 either - so please gain some perspective and be nice to other money savers - at this stage changing terms means everyone loses out as we cannot retrieve the situation.

Answer I have had is that the intention is for the claim screen to be available until 5pm on 18th.

Thank you - though it does beg the question, as it says 18th June, and that is not being interpreted as 23.59 on 17th June, any time up to 23.59 on 18th is still within their stated terms so some people may be left disappointed.

The difference between this offer and many that I've been involved in is that both parties get the same present. Where that isn't the case, where the referrer alone gets the present, it is usual, even necessary, to offer to share. Where the present is big enough I've seen competitions develop between people offering a bigger and bigger 'share'! In a world other than banking.

I seldom use Amazon so I'm getting something (though for nothing) that I will have to find a purpose for. It may not work out for me as 'worth' the £50 a shot, so I personally wouldn't have paid any extra.

Look at it another way. Disregard this Santander offer altogether, then, if someone offered you a £50 amazon voucher for a £10 payment, would you accept, i certainly would. If you did that 5 times, you would have the means to purchase something on Amazon valued at £500 and what would you have paid for it, a mere £50. At the end of the day, it is personal choice, take it or don't. No need to be calling fellow members greedy good for nothings.

Despite the Board Guide continually making it clear on the other related thread that re-posts were not allowed, you did repost with update(s) on how many codes you had left until they were all taken which put those who only posted once on the thread editing their existing thread at a disadvantage. ( deleted posts arent gone for good)

Someone else previously said no to the same suggestion/proposal by me and later came back to me with a counter proposal. :T

This is personal. In post 82 on the referrers' thread I said I had 4 codes available (16 May at 2.34pm); on 20 May at 3.43pm I added by an edit All gone. I have not used the Referrers' thread for years so maybe I was unsure about the rules - as you are no doubt going going to delve in the deleted posts to present the conclusive evidence that I was at fault.

This was you at post 59 - 'Anyone want to offer me a tenner by PM to use a code :D' We are not all black and white.

This cuts both ways. Personally I've not been offended by people asking for money to use one of my codes, I've just politely declined. I've also not been offended by people "kindly offering [me] their RAF code" by unsolicited PM.

My position is that people should make a post with their offer in the referrer's board and let others choose whether to accept it or not. This particular scheme has been complicated by a ban on some 'better' offers being made (splitting) but not others (swapping). But anyone taking up this offer as a referree and doing the work of phoning up and switching is losing out if they only get one £50 Amazon voucher for their work. It's just a shame there is no obvious mechanism for determining who wants to offer a little more to ensure their codes are all used.

I swapped all my codes with others such that we each received £100 per pair of codes. That allowed me to use up all of my codes and switch all the accounts I wanted. Beyond that, I considered it not worth a £50 voucher to open a new current account just to switch it for the offer. However, had someone come along and offered me a referral split to do so, I would have given it due consideration. But I did not actively seek out such an arrangement and did not receive any such offers.
