Double my electricity usage

Hello. I am looking for some advice please. I have recently moved from a 20 year old property to a brand new build house. My electricity and gas bills have more than doubled in the new property.

Although we have gone from a 4 bed to a five bed, we have one less person. One bedroom is not used and one is rarely used. We have not changed any usage habits. The new property is meant to be more energy efficient in every way. The old property had a knackered old boiler and was a cold and poor in efficiency.

I currently have a test unit installed on the meter but it seems to be reading fine.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why my bills might have more than doubled or what i can do to try and find out?

It's going to be difficult to compare - so lets ensure the new house ones are correct.

I presume we are talking actual and not estimated readings ? What are they for your new house ? Tariff ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Not nearly enough info. Post your actual kWh usage and proper advice can be given. Were both properties using gas CH and DHW?
How long have you been there? If less than 6m then you cannot pro-rata usage up for a full year.
Is it just that your DD has been set higher than before? The DD does not represent your actual usage, it's just a guesstimate. Was your last bill based on actual or estimated readings?

Hi. My readings are all actual readings. I have gas central heating and everything else is electric. I have an emmersion heater which is on about two hours a day.

I dont have access to my account at the moment as the system is down. But i know my meter has gone up 115 in the last 5 days

What are you concerned about, gas or electricity?

Electricity is my main concern. I do think my gas is running high bit i'll deal with that another time when i see a full picture in the summer when using less heating.

Presumably your water was heated by gas in the previous home?

Why - when you have a gas boiler ?

Electric I/H = 6kwh a day. ie about 25% of your elec bill

? Are your showers gas or electric ?

  • My mistake. Its not an emmersion heater. It is a gas boiler and water tank.
  • Yes. Everything is the same as it was in my old house.

Which meter has gone up 115 in 5 days? if electricity then you are heating something as that is too much.
