Bag one fit in the cage apart from wheels, bag two didn't fit due to wheels but is definitely smaller than some which have been allowed on. They both fit in the overhead lockers on way down.

I guess the infuriating thing is Edinburgh airport allowing our bags (and I've never had trouble before), and clearly loads of other bags allowed through which are bigger than mine. It's a lack of consistency. Wouldn't you agree? Especially after a two hour delay.

Wheels are included in airline maximum bag dimensions.

Sure, you were unlucky on the way back - but lucky on the way out...

the lack of consistency is annoying. In reality you should have been charged for both legs. Baggage fees are a revenue stream for the airlines so they are rarely in the habit of giving freebies.
I guess Edinburgh may get their knuckles wrapped and be told to enforce the rules correctly in future as it is not consistent for passengers.

I agree, OP was lucky on the outward flight, if Edinburgh had followed their own procedures then poor OP would have been charged both ways. OP at least you were only charged once!

Fair points. I guess after a 2 hour delay and seeing loads of other bags much bigger than mine allowed on I was frustrated.

It will make me think twice about Flybe in future though.

You will find they are mostly the same, all have bag dimensions, sometimes they stop people and sometimes they don't.

The bag in question has never been stopped by easyjet or ryanair (for example), I travel a lot to London from Edinburgh with work so that might hint at why I'm frustrated (not to mention the delay). It also fit under the seat in front of me on the way down, which Flybe states is for a laptop/briefcase/handbag, so if it can fit under the seat in front - shouldn't they review their policy?

As someone else has said, it's a revenue stream.

Anyway - thanks for the replies all.

    Different airlines, different sizes allowed

    Easyjet 56 x 45 x 25cm
    Ryanair 55 x 40 x 20cm (if pay Priority)
    Flybe 55 x 35 x 20cm

    .

Of course it is - the purpose of the airline is to make money for its shareholders.
If you don't want to pay out £40, the easy peasy, lemon squezey solution is to take a bag that fits FlyBe's parameters. Quoting what Ryanair/Easyjey will/will not do is as relevant as saying what Stagecoach buses, Virgin Trains or Stevie the Uber driver will let you take along.

If you are a frequent flyer then I am surprised you are not aware that the airlines all have different sizes and rules regarding cabin bags.
