Compensation

Hi there
I am looking for some advice on how to claim against a company not registered on resolver.
The circumstances are; I received a bedspread as a gift at Christmas. I followed the washing instructions carefully but when the bedspread got wet in the machine it was so heavy that it broke my washing machine and I had to find £250 to buy a replacement. This has been very difficult as I’ve been unfairly dismissed from my job and that is a lot of money for me. I contacted the company and all they have offered me is a 20% refund of the price paid for the item..which amounts to £3!!!! Not much help! And frankly..an insult.... I said I was not satisfied with this response and said I would escalate the complaint further but when I tried via resolver the company is not listed.
Could someone tell me to which body/organisation/law I need to apply to take this further.

Thanks

Why would you get compensation? You didn't buy the bedspread it was a gift. Plus you put it in a normal washing machine did they instruct you to do that?
  • Hi tess, expect a visit from comms telling you all the things wrong or irrelevant in your post...(there are a few)

I don’t think you are owed anything, and it’s quite probable that the machine was on its way out anyway.

I’d drop the claim and move on if I were you.

Sorry, but it's hardly the bedspread seller's fault if you overloaded your machine, causing it to break. I can't see any way that you could pursue them for the costs as you have no proof that they are responsible as opposed to you overloading the machine/ it failing due to age. In any case you wouldn't be entitled to a new machine, it would be the current value of the one that broke, which for a cheap machine reaching the end of it's life could be as little as £25.

Your machine wasn’t capable of handling the weight. How much did the quilt weigh wet? What’s your machine capability? Do you know both of these things?
  • As I read it, OP receives a gift of a bedspread, washes it in their home washing machine (rather than a commercial laundrette, as it probably should have been), overloads their old creaking washing machine which breaks down as a result. They then lose their job, possibly because of the time being spent sorting out their washing machine, and now wants compensation from the sellers of the bedspread, with whom she has no contractual relationship as the bedspread was a gift.

My overriding concern would be with no bedspread and no washing machine, you have to think of the children. With nothing to sleep under at night, and no clean clothes to wear, £3 is derisory. You always have to think of the children.

You need to sue whoever gave it to you as a gift, as it's all their fault.

The bedspread didn't get heavier. The water in it would have weighed the same as if you were washing a pair of knickers.

Isn't this the same as duvets being sold as washable? My king size down duvet states clearly that it is washable at a low temperature , the fact that it doesn't actually fit in my normal sized domestic washing machine even dry is immaterial. The label is correct, the duvet is technically washable- but not actually possible unless I go to my local launderette that has the giant machine.

My washing machine has a dry and a wet weight limit and I would assume all do if you read the manual. It is logical to me that anything padded or heavy to start with that will soak up water will easily exceed the wet weight- so I don't use it for over large or heavy items.

That's an assumption. The machine could have a broke with a single sock in it.
