But you can't use that as a yardstick. You'll come up short.

No it will not, a metre is longer than a yard:rotfl:

Fitting a meter was the best thing Southern Water did for us, monthly bill came down from £16 to £7.50. No brainer really.

 with Welsh Water even on a meter our standing charge alone was £19 a month then usage on top.

Ouch. They really should privatise the industry so competition can force prices down......Oh hang on

That was my reaction when they privatised the railways with great success. As a "customer", I really benefit from the choice offered to me to get from my town to London by all those competing rail companies...it's really sharpened their act on punctuality, capacity and comfort as well. It's been a triumph.

My water bill was reduced by 50% when I had a meter fitted years ago, it's still only £19 a month.

Well you might like to consider that Welsh Water is still in public ownership and was never privatised.
So it's not surprising that as usual the wasteful public sector is costing more than the private sector equivalent.
As it ever was in the days of publicly owned British Rail, GPO phones and the rest.
I'm in Thames Water's region and have relatives with Welsh Water and they pay far more than me for the same volumetric adjusted amount used.
The sooner Welsh water is privatised the better.

What happened after Welsh water was privatised in 1989?

After we had a meter fitted we paid less than £20 a month in the most expensive area in the country for water. That included a washing machine, dishwasher and bath rather than shower.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_Water:
Welsh Water Authority was privatised by stock market flotation in 1989, along with the other nine regional water authorities, which provided the company with a substantial cash surplus for some years, which it used to diversify in a wide range of sectors including leisure (Hotels, Fishing etc.).

After expansion in to other things, Welsh Water found itself in financial difficulties and is now a non-profit organisation.

Water charges in Wales cover the whole country.

Welsh Water: 33p a day, plus £3.11 for every unit of water used (1,000L).

Wessex Water: 22p a day, plus £4.07 for ever unit of water used.

Thames Water: 24p a day, plus up to £1.92 for every unit of water used.

Prices includes water and sewerage. Thames Water seems to charge customers a different amount based on where they live. Some of its customers pay less than £1 for every unit of water used (Westminster).

I'd guess providing water services to a place such as Wales costs more because it has many homes that are in rural locations.

Welsh Water offers several discount schemes. For example, households with an income of less than £15,000 a year can apply for HelpU. They then pay a fixed sum of £197.37 a year for water and sewerage.

Thames Water offers a scheme, with more restrictions, which caps annual bills at £383.
