Hi,

I have recently bought a house with my boyfriend. The house had no water meter fitted when we bought it.
(It just about had a roof!)

United utility’s are now saying because the previous owners had a water a meter fitted, that they must have removed, it is compulsory we have one fitted.

I don’t know how I feel about this.
I am reading a lot not to get a water meter as it will cost more but I would like to have the choice as it is my home.

Do I have a leg to stand on to refuse the meter being fitted?
I have said no, and they basically said I have to have it because the previous owners had one.

Thanks, Katie

Nope, when owners of a property change the water companies can legally fit a water meter to the property.

Previous owner of my house lived there for 20+ years. When my wife and I bought our current house the water company were able to legally enforce a water metre to be fitted.
  • For a couple a water meter is likely to be the cheaper option, unless you are obsessive car washers or water your lawn lots.
  • Saved me £250 last year, wish I'd had one a few years earlier. 4 bed house, 2 adult residents.

I have stopped washing the cars every week though!!

  • Even with four adults in our household our bills are lower on a meter than they would be on rates.

It's no bad thing to be aware of how much water you're using. It's not a limitless resource and if you're profligate with water you may be wasteful with other things, too.
  • Just for reference it's meter not metre.
  • Just for reference it's meter not metre.

    And vice versa.:)

Wouldn't that depend on how long it is?

But you can't use that as a yardstick. You'll come up short.
  • KSMC sounds nice. It's been good to meet 'er.
  • Fitting a meter was the best thing Southern Water did for us, monthly bill came down from £16 to £7.50. No brainer really.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
