That's exactly the one i have a Dell XPS 15" Thanks

Use the opportunity to fit an SSD to the device. You won't regret it. It;s very easy to do.
  • Did yiu download the media creation tool to your hard disk, and then try to create the media onto the USB stick (of at least 8GB) from your HDD

I downloaded the media creation tool to an external USB stick then rebooted via boot manager/F12 now its coming up with another error message

Don't you realise that over the years there have been a number of models of Dell XPS 15?

Yes Chino I do and your point is? I have an XPS and can talk dx052 through exactly what he has to do, given that I have been there and done that myself.
  • So to get the drivers and bios etc updated use the link below for Dell SupportAssist UK. This will give you the dell site in UK.

    https://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukdhs1/eula/scan?lwp=

    CLick Support Tab
    Click Drivers & Downloads
    Click Detect PC

You should see your product ID, with the model variant, all the drivers, including bios that need to be updated. Lets get you this far to start off with. Then we can talk you through W10.

Let us know how you get on.

Using another computer, download the media creation tool to the hard from here :-

(click on "download tool" and NOT "update now")

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

    And run it.
    Accept the terms.
Choose "Create installation media for another PC"

UNtick "use the recommended options for this PC" so that you can adjust the options in this window.
choose your language, edition (W10) and architecture (64 or 32 bit)

Choose USB flash drive (and make sure there is one in the slot that is empty and has 8G free)
pick the drive from the list it offers and let it download windows and complete the USB

Next , eject the Stick from current PC and put it in the PC to be updated.

Whilst you turn the target pc on, keep mashing the F12 key until you get a list of boot devices to choose from
Choose the USB key and windows will install.

FWIW, when it comes to the time to give it a key, you can use an old windows 7 key that was pro if you want W10 pro

Note to Techquest . It matters not if you have had experience updating an XPS machine before. The model of the case has no bearing on the process

OP , by the sounds of it, where you were going wrong was downloading the tool its self to a usb stick - this is not the way.
Follow what i have written above and it will work. Ignore the bits posted from someone else about updating drivers etc - that is twaddle

What extra stuff do you get with Win10 Pro that you don't get with Win 10 Home???
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.
