Hello all
I have been working in my new retail job for 3 weeks i am (Supposed to be on a 16) Hour contract however i have been working 30 + Hours.
When i took the job i informed them i am under a cardiologist for a heart condition which causes me to faint and very rarely fit. (I am on the transplant list for a new heart also)
They said that was of no problem to them and that they would just call an ambulance.
The only issue is...when i pass out/faint i am incredibly lathargic and unfit really to work for the rest of the day.
How can i go about telling them i cannot do more than my contracted hours? I asked my manager if i should inform the other members of staff about my condition and he said 'No don't worry about it'
I have no problem with the work but the demanding hours for example i am in work for 2 days on the go doing from 3pm until midnight is a bit much.
Any advice would be welcome
Thanks.

Should you really be working? Your condition must be extremely life threatening to be on a heart transplant list.
Honestly, my advice would be to stop working and make do somehow. You must surely be eligible for ESA? Your current working pattern puts your life at risk, nothing is worth that.0 -
I'm afraid the best advice is just to have a chat with your line manager.
If they refuse to manage your hours to a level you are comfortable with, then you just have to walk out on the jobChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
Why are you working 30 hours if you're contracted to work 16? You're the one who is allowing this to happen and since it clearly suits your employer, they aren't going to change things unless you do.0

They point blankly refuse to budge, I’m only 24 and they seem to think despite my condition I’m able to work these loonatic hours!
I haven’t been told of any benefits I could get because of my heart either.0 -
What also irks me! To put it politely is that they employ other students who only do 1! 8 hour shift per week yet I’m on 30 plus hours.0

If you are contracted for 16 hours, what does your contract say about extra hours?Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

Absolutely nothing about extra hours.
Yesterday i had to practically beg my team leader to let me go home as i was having chest pains and was struggling to breath.
I managed to stay until 10:30 but i then just had to leave with his permission as it was just intolerable.
They have been told by my GP and Cardiologist that if anything happens to me on their watch they are responsible.0 -

I really am at a loss as to why you are still working.
If the business has any sense they will have dismissed you after last night. If they haven't already sacked you they probably will very soon - which actually will be good for you.
When they do, I really would look at your benefit entitlement instead of employment. I'm surprised your cardiologist and GP are supporting you working at all.0 -
Thanks and yes i get it in the neck from my consultant and doctor most weeks regarding working.
I'm just very stubborn but i appreciate all the comments.
I'll have a look into the benefit entitlements that i may be able to get.
I'm heading in today to hand in my notice, how long do you think i should give?
Thanks.0 -
