    Just to update.She has XP on her laptop.Having explained the limited options,she has decided to ask our local repair shop that will look at anything electrical,and has dealt with printers before.Hopefully it can be repaired so she won't need to replace it.

    I'll say to start with that my geography is atrocious, but I'm in South Yorkshire with a printer I was going to bin.
    It worked on an old XP machine and has the printer drivers on CD(hurrah!).

    You can have it if you want to collect it.

    From memory (it's currently collecting dust) it's a USB connection.

    Yes it is but the offer is much appreciated anyway.
    Have you tried your local freecycle? It keeps items out of landfill,and may help someone in need.
