Activation lock requires the users apple ID and password not the passcode.
Even at 80 you should know what email you used for your apple ID (and usually the activation lock gives half of this as a reminder) you can then speak to apple they should be able to reset the password for that account with some basic information. You dont need to prove ownership of the ipad as its locked via the appleID and not a passcode

If it is asking for a passcode then you have not factory restored it correctly

I didn't factory restore it, the "genius" in the Apple shop did.

We are stuck with a useless iPad now, no way back in due to forgotton details.

No you aren’t, do some research into a full DFU restore, it will remove any passcodes when done, unfortunately it will only take you back to the activation lock once complete, so you really need to remember the email address and password for the Apple ID.

Thank you! I did this DFU thing, and the ipad allowed me to make a new apple id, and then create a new password and create new answers to the security questions. I wasn't asked for the original email address nor password. The iPad is now working perfectly well. I can't quite believe it, Apple had washed their hands of me, so thank you again!

No problem, I’m glad it worked for you, sounds like it was just a passcode lock that was your original issue then.
