Apple, Activation lock

Options
Long, long story short..... I have an ipad requiring an activation code, the account holder cannot remember her password, and the receipt from the shop where the ipad was purchased differs from the amount taken from the bank by 2p, so it looks like that transaction was for something else. I have been deep down into the Apple "support" rabbit hole and their final decree is that because the receipt from the shop doesn't match their records they can't help further.

So, this ipad, is it truly beyond use now? Can anything be done, or should I just throw it in the bin?
Thanks.

Can you ask the seller to go to the applied.apple.com site and answer the questions, first name, last name and email address, where she might be able to recover the account and password?

Do you mean the purchaser/owner, or someone at the shop?

The OP is I think referring to the password lock on the ipad screen and not the password for the appleID username.

If you have forgotten the ipad lock screen password then there is no way in - that is why it is ultra secure even if you have the appleid username/password combo and can log in on another computer that does not allow to you reset a locked ipad.

There is a way to totally reset an ipad to as new condition sometimes used when giving an ipad to another person and wanting to totally wipe all your stuff off it.
I cannot remember how to do it but I'm sure others will be along shortly
Its basically a factory reset - obviously you loose all the stuff on it - but at least you have a functional ipad again.

The owner of the ipad has forgotton the answers to her security questions (she is 80 years old, she has most of her marbles but the memory one is worn out). She entered incorrect passwords a multitude of times and got completely locked out. We went to the Appe shop and they referred her to their helpline and in the meantime restored the ipad to factory status.

The helpline peope sent her on a wild goose chase getting a copy receipt from the shop, then getting a copy of the bank statement showing the transaction to the shop matched the receipt (and somehow it didn't, the sum on the bank statement is 2p more than the receipt, God only knows why, it was four years ago), and also asked for photos of the box. They will not issue an activation code saying that the receipt doesn't match their records and have referred her back to the shop. The shop has given everything they can. There is no obvious way forward with this. There is nothing wrong with actual ipad, it's just that Apple are refusing to help us unlock it.

Is there anything at all that we can do with the ipad without the original owner's original userid login, other than bin it?

It's not Apple refusing to help you it's them following good procedures in stopping people getting access to a persons personal computer without proper authorisation. I would rather they had high levels of security checks to stop anyone getting into my devices if they got stolen or lost.

At this moment I do not see anyway of getting into that iPad.

I have successfully done more or less as described in the third paragraph of Uxb1's post.....

In my case the previous owner had attempted to follow instructions to wipe the iPad (successfully or not I have no means of knowing) but it still booted up to the screen requiring their pass code.

From memory the instructions I found involved connecting it to iTunes on a computer it had never been connected to before then booting the iPad holding buttons in a particular way. It worked and restored it to an "out of the box" condition but with the latest version of iOS the device would support.

That was about 18 months ago with a iPad 2 which will only run up to iOS 10.3.3.

It is possible that procedure is no longer valid or is blocked after repeated attempts with the wrong password.

It may also matter whether the iPad has been signed out of iCloud or not? I think in my case the previous owner said he had (tried?) to do so.

It took me a fair bit of searching online to find the instructions but it did work.

You could attempt the above, google iPad (model) recovery mode.

However the original user will still normally have to have their Apple ID and Password.

Once recovered you should be able to set up as a new iPad but you will then get a screen asking for the original username and password (username will have asterisks blocking certain information).

If that does not work you have a paperweight and Apple have met their security requirements.

This used to work but not sure nowadays as apple are so hot on security they think your device belongs to them and not you!

    1. Make sure your iPad is off.
    2. Connect your apple usb cable to your Pc but don’t connect your device to the cable yet.
    3. Open iTunes on your PC.
    4. Press and hold your iOS device and whilst continuing to hold the Home button plug the cable into the iPad.
    5. Connecting the device should cause it to turn on, but continue to hold the Home button.
    6. A message should appear in iTunes telling you that a device in Recovery Mode has been detected.
    7. Restore your iOS device By using IOS Recovery Mode.

There are other methods but lets see if this gets you anywhere first. Meanwhile I stand corrected if it doesn't.
