Mexico/Carribean All Inclusive

the wife has decided we are to go AI to Mexico or somewhere in the Caribbean. Previously we have always gone for Villas. 2 adults and 2 children.

Is there any pitfalls or traps I need to avoid when looking? I want decent quality and price isn't the driver, quality and comfort are.

Not really - although the huge amount of choice may give you a headache!

We've done Mexico and the Dominion Republic and both have been very good. We've had 3 lovely holidays at Dreams La Romana (now Hilton La Romana & Adults only unfortunately) - but have stayed at other Dreams resorts which have a similar setup and are well geared for families.

I expect all of the resort hotels are going to have daily activities that you can duck in and out of.

Anything in particular you're worried about?

Not really, just after decent food!

Would 10 days be too short with the jet lag?

Behave, of course it wouldnt. I've done a 4 day trip to Vegas, and that is further west, and I was fine. Its just a longer day on the day of the flight, nothing a slightly earlier bedtime when you get there wont cure.

TRS Yucatan, part of the Grand Palladium complex, was fantastic for food and premium drinks. One of the best holidays I have ever had. Lobster in every restaurant with no surcharge. It is, however, adults only but the other hotels within the complex cater for children.

We did 10 days in Mexico last Easter. Couldn't decide which AI resort to stay in so did 5 nights in both the ones we fancied and did a private trip to Chichenitza on the day we moved hotels which sorted out the transfer.

First hotel was Hotel Xcaret Mexico on the Riviera Maya which offered free access to all the X parks; second one was The Grand at Moon Palace, just south of the Cancun hotel zone. I would go back to both - in fact, we've already booked to go back to the first one for a full 11 nights!

We have been numerous times to Mexico and would always recommend two weeks, we don’t like Cancun and normally stay in The Riviera Maya at The Iberostar Grand Paraiso .

Sandsy - who do you book Hotel Xcaret with? I am looking at it for Easter next year, but struggling to price it up...
  • Have you considered a cruise? Many good deals especially with MSC with free child spaces.

We booked direct with the hotel - did our flights separately as we managed to book using frequent flyer points. I think Thomas Cook offer it; also available on many of the usual booking engines - Expedia,booking.com, Travel Republic etc
