If they aren’t going to pay up forthwith, charge them high interest on the unsecured and unauthorized loan you’ve made. Another solicitor will arrange this for you. Plus a fee for the inconvenience and disruption this has caused.

Hardly realistic though - the firm isn't likely to have a wodge of their own cash sitting somewhere convenient.
Then they should have to borrow it at their cost. It literally should not be the OPs problem and they shouldn't be subject to this cockamamie scheme of the money trickling back in dribs and drabs, what goes on behind the scenes shouldn't be visible to them

I'm not disputing that they should, just querying whether it's likely that they can borrow the additional sum on demand (or even any faster than it's going to take the third party to refund the money).

I don't know about late completion but he could look at 8%?

I've had the first £20k today, rest of monies (£22k) tomorrow.

It's a good job I had no immediate plans for the money!

If it all comes in tomorrow I will leave it at that I think, although my solicitor friend is saying I should at least use their complaints procedure and would most likely get half the conveyancing fee back.

Yes, do complain. Not necessarily for compo but to make sure it never happens again and they review their process.

What bank has a £20k limit on transfers?
Nationwide appear to have a limit of £10K, I needed to transfer £12.5K to pay off a PCP settlement and had to do it as £10K and £2.5K payments.
