Solicitor's mistake. Request he sends you all your money right now, with no delay. He can, if he chooses wait for his money to be sent day by day... but that's his problem, not yours.

Given the solicitor has shown himself a careless and irresponsible idiot, I'd want my money out of his butterfingers straight away!

Hardly realistic though - the firm isn't likely to have a wodge of their own cash sitting somewhere convenient.

They go overdrawn if they have no money and pay the fees.

They have still breached their accounting rules. I would put pressure on them to get the cash sooner

Absolutely realistic, even if just to force the solicitor to suggest solutions other than "wait; we'll probably get your money back in dribs and drabs over the next two weeks... probably"

What does your house sale contract say about the interest rate to be paid on late completion.
Just as a starter you should expect that to be added.

I had asked for their client to make a CHAPS payment but the client has said he can only do that in a branch and he can't get to a branch as he is working. I guess I'll just have to wait...

What’s wrong with a cheque for the whole lot? It’ll only take a few days to clear.

I don't think they are allowed to do cheques anymore due to the draconian money laundering regs. Everyone gets treated like Pablo Escobar.

Literally cheques play no part in that regard here. The money is clearly coming from the same account as it was sent to.
