Hi
planning to sell my hatchback and buy a second hand(upto 3 years old) SUV( mainly due to back problems),but would like it to be safe on the snow as well.
Daily town and monthly 2-3 times motorway driving.
Any make/model suggestions.Budget is 15-16K max

Tyres are what makes the difference in snow. Just choose the car you like and budget for a decent set of all-season tyres.0

As above. Tyres, tyres, tyres!
You could have a top spec SUV running on 20" alloys with low profile tyres. Naff for winter, great for summer.
You need decent winter tyres to make ant decent progress while remaining in control.0 -
As already mentioned, it's all about the tyres. Watch the video

I drove a people carrier through the Alps in winter on winter tyres. I had shed loads of grip going up a hill as the Saab behind me slid gracefully backwards.
If a people carrier can manage snow anything can. It's all about the rubber.0 -

Buy a normal car, fit all season tyres to it - Goodyear Vector 4seasons Gen 2 for example.
SUVs are more dangerous in the snow than a car, more weight to stop and change direction.0 -
With a 4 wheel drive you will get moving easier and are less likely to get stuck, but stopping and controlling the car are no different. I saw a Ford ranger slide into a ditch last week as the driver was going to fast in the snow and couldnt stop!
An 4x4 with high ground clearance and winter tyres will cope with anything and keep you safe0 -
You can buy a new Dacia Duster for that (or thereabouts).... 4x4 plus you get the warranty...0

Coincidently I have done just that, and I'm very impressed with the car for the price! Only had it 3 days but so far I consider it incredible value for money. Especially compared to my neighbours brand new Ford Kuga which they paid over £10k more for!0
