Is the garage fit for human habitation? Which mean the utilities, bathroom facilities and insulation of the brickwork, roofing etc. I recollect one program on TV talking about these garages being converted - badly - into a space for rent and the fact was they are not designed for human occupation. Housing Officers have a campaign on finding these places and closing them down.

If you want someone to live in an outbuilding in some modicum semblance of home life, then build/or convert a proper building regulation passed annexe. Until that has been done, give up your room and you sleep in the living room.

I admire wanting to help but putting family in the garage? You probably could do it - practically it would be a while before anyone's objections filtered through to action. However I (and I suspect I'm far from alone) just couldn't do that. It feels demeaning. I'd put 'stuff' in the garage and squeeze the people in the house. Use the garage as a TV room/playroom/place for privacy perhaps but when it comes to overnight that would have to be everyone indoors for me.
