I'm another one who just thinks let them live in the main house with you!

Surely a blow up bed on the living room floor is better than being banished to the garage or if your feeling generous rotate the use of a bedroom!!!!

If its genuinely only 6 months whilst they sort themselves out bring them into the main home.

so what happens when in the middle of the nigh FIL or indeed MIL need the loo...a visit back into the main house in their pyjamas and dressing gowns?
You don't mention that there is direct access from the garage to the house so they would need keys to let themselves in?

I'm not sure what type of sleep deprivation they face now but living in an external garage doesn't sound much of an aid to help them sleep either...sorry.

  • Aside from all the legalities, wouldn't it be too cold in the garage in the moment? I know that there is insulation, and of course you can add extra heating, but it's like to ramp up the leccie bill quite a bit.

I have things in my garage like petrol, white spirit, oil, paint and there are residual smells that I would not like to sleep with.

Another vote for airbed/camp bed in the lounge.

As far as I know it would be illegal and most probably council will fine you, and worse you may get a criminal record. If this was allowed I highly doubt people will not be doing it.

I know certain landlords do this, but council catches them with helicopter based IR cameras.

I am sure you will be reported by your neighbours !!

I very much doubt that either the council or the neighbours would do anything of the sort
You are perfectly entitled to use your garage as a heated hobby room 24/7 if you so wish

The council might fine you if they served you some kind of cease and desist notice and you ignored it
I also suspect that these helicopters flights are few and far between as the costs of flying helicopters are very high

The only problem I can see is what you are going to do if they decide to stay longer than the 6 months. If they have been short of money for some time and they find that they have a lot to spare and spend they may still be there in 3 years.

They don't need helicopters they can use satellite imaging these days.

A friend of mine was "raided" as his roof was showing up as a hot temperature.
He's a geek and had a lot of computers in his loft and wasn't growing drugs.

It's not just Milton Keynes either. Even down here in darkest Westcountryshire, surveillance is unavoidable.

A few years ago, I decided to section off part of our orchard from the chickens, so I popped in half a dozen posts and strung a plastic bird fence between them.

Lo and behold, within 12-18 months DEFRA's map had been fully updated to show this new chicken no-fly zone!

Good to know our taxes are being used so diligently for [STRIKE]spying[/STRIKE] fraud prevention. ;)

I don't think they can heat-seek a two kW electric firefrom Earth orbit yet, but don't quote me on that.
  • Suggest they store their stuff in the garage and use it as a day room, but sleep on a blow-mattress in the living room at night.

My nan was born one of 9 children; her grandparents lived with them and slept on the landing. People used to manage.

It's great that you're able to help them out. Could another option be that you pay 6 months rent upfront for them in a new place?
