If you have back access where no one can see then who would know?

As far as your neighbours are concerned they are staying with you.

The only issue may be when the garage light is on in tbe middle of the night or they need the toilet and the neighbours call the police thinking you have burglars.....

Of course you can let them stay in your garage.
If you have kids I would be more inclined to let them camp out in the garage as it will be more exciting for them, and let the in-laws stay in the room.

To do it legally you need change of use to residential from the council and it is unlikely you would get it.

From a practical point of view - what if they need the loo in the middle of the night?

    Flushable camping loo. £40 ish.

So they can do number 2s in front of each other :eek

How about they stay in the lounge/dining room?
Or how about being cramped for a bit?

:rotfl: Why would that be necessary? They would just go out the back door of the garage and into the house if they needed the toilet...

You CAN but you MAY NOT.

Just like you can drive at 95 mph on the M4 but you may not.

To everyone saying it's illegal / breaks regulations... What's your source for that?

If OP were a landlord and the in-laws tenants then there'd be rules... If OP was making alterations to the garage to make it habitable then it may need planning permission and/or building regs... But if the garage is staying as-is and family kip in there in sleeping bags, what rules are being broken?

    Not being snarky, just curious!

EDIT: Just found this old post which answers my question if the info is still current:

OP - have a look at that thread. You do risk nosy neighbours posting on here about it. :D
