Looking at it as a "normal" transaction - if i sold the car to some bloke tonight at his house, he'd log on tomorrow morning and tax it online and i'd post off the V5C tomorrow morning first post?

    I'm effectively replicating that.
Surely you don't have to post anything, you can do the transfer online.

I had this same scenario last year when buying a car from a mate. We did the owner change on the last day of the month. He had SORNd it a few days before as he didn't want to pay for the next month's tax, and I didn't want to pay for the previous one.
I couldn't tax it until DVLA had acknowledged the SORN, which took 5 days, THEN I could...
You might be OK if you skip the SORN step.

But, as there is no issue insuring a car you don't own, I don't see any need to change owner in the first place.

A lot of people still talk about posting things in topics regarding changing the keeper for some reason, despite there being an online service.

I would NOT do this, as it will add another keeper to the car's history and achieve nothing.

    I wouldn't bother either.

    Wasted effort.

So theres no issue taxing the car when the insurance certificate is in a different name to the registered keeper?

That used to be a problem....

Insurance certificates haven't been checked on taxing for more than five years...

As long as the insurance know who is the registered keeper and who is the main driver and are happy then no problem.

    Taxing a vehicle
    Unable to use service

Sorry we are unable to check your vehicle insurance details because you are taxing the vehicle as a new keeper.

To tax your vehicle please take your proof of insurance, MOT and V5C or V5C/2 to a Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax.
