Proving Housing Benefit for Credit Card

Comments

  • Just ask Housing Benefits for a letter stating what your entitlement is. You don't need to tell them what you want it for. You should get a letter at least yearly stating what you get per week if only when your rent / benefit rates change. Mine is paid direct to my landlord but I still get all the letters sent to me.
  • Technically though it’s not income nor earnings, it goes straight to the landlord, you never see it, so I’m not sure why they would want proof of that.

Plus, you technically receive a benefit...HB...you would have a decision letter, how did you find out what you were awarded and how much and the starting date and if the whole rent was covered etc without a decision letter?

Just go back to your local authority and ask for a copy of your decision letter, they WILL have it..don’t ring, go in person.

Tell Vanquis it's not income. As they're the ones lending me thousands of pounds, I'm inclined to believe them over you. You implied I had been dishonest in my application and told them I was not on benefits to fraudulently obtain credit. What is that if not judgement?
Oh get over yourself. I very recently had the same credit card for 1.5 years to get my credit rating up.

Used it, paid it off in full each month. I had 3 credit increases in the time i had it and not once did they ask for proof of the benefits i received. All i had was a text message saying i'd been given an increase and to reply to the text if i wanted it earlier.

I am looking to get a mortgage soonish, and every little helps

Would have thought getting a mortgage will be difficult if your only income is benefits.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Nobody is having a dig. You need not to be so defensive.

At least you're well balanced, a chip on both shoulders...

Increasing my available credit helps my credit history overall. It shows I can be trusted with higher limits. I am looking to get a mortgage soonish, and every little helps.

Anyone else want to have a dig?

I don't want to have a dig as you put it, and I myself live on benefits and have CC's with a credit limit of over £12k, however I very much doubt that you will get a mortgage on benefits.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. /s

The housing executive will not provide me will a letter stating my entitlement, as stated in the first post. This is my problem. Telling me to just ask for one again or that I must have one is no help at all.

Not that it's anyone's business, but plenty of people get a joint mortgage with one partner on benefits. I don't see why people are telling me otherwise.

Thanks for all the success stories of other card providers who do not need proof. As someone who has had a credit card of some description for nearly 15 years now, I know its not been a normal thing all providers require. I'm aware of the pre-credit crunch times when an 18 year old unemployed person with no history could get a £3k limit with a high street bank. I'm surprised people still have cards from that time!

I'm going to go ahead with a subject access request to try to get the information I need - I'm just loathed too as asking for one specific thing from esa and PIP records lead me to be sent 1,000 pages of assorted data.

Again, thanks for not answering my questions at all and just trying to make me feel bad. This board really is a lovely place.
  • What is your housing executive called?
  • What do you mean?! It's just the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. I'm not telling you which branch, it's not relevant. It's the government department who deal with housing.
  • Well I’ve just made a call to them and the lovely lady on the phone said if someone wants confirmation of their HB entitlement including private tenants they just need to pop into their local branch/office and ask.

No explanation of why you need this is required because any individual in receipt of HB is allowed to have written acknowledgement of their current entitlement.

    Sorted!
