Do you think this board is well frequented?

I'm probably going to get in trouble for spamming but I wanted to compare how many people read a new thread on here compared to the main In My Home Board

I very rarely bother to visit this board. Partly because there is never much to read but mostly because it is generally a waste of time.

Every time someone asks..."is this quote fair?" the only answer you can ever give is "get a couple more quotes."

Do people honestly think there is a magic formula so a replacement boiler always costs £3,527.14 and replacement guttering and fascia always costs £2,758.27 or an extension always costs £1850 per square metre? etc. etc.

Every single job is different, quantities vary, access varies, the customer varies, price of materials change, the contractor might be busy or work is slow and they need to fill a gap in their work bookings etc. etc. The only way you can be sure is to get at least 3 good quotes from local recommended contractors (not chancers off the lead generating sites like MyBuilder etc.) and compare what the tradesmen think the job will cost.

I don't often log into the site as i mostly just read without posting but, as i mentioned on your other thread, i always look in here !


Yes, it's not used as much but i think that's because of complacency, far easier for people to not spend time reading and exploring fully when they can post randomly and know Mods will redirect it.


Not sure how this thing/title/thread can be made any clearer than it is now but do know folks take easiest routes for whatever reasons.

I think it is a pointless board. You and I are both in the industry and both know that each quote is unique. So to ask people who have never seen the job as to whether the quote is fair is foolish.

Maybe it is to you.

To us, Joe Public, though, it gives a yardstick with which to base our own thoughts and decisions on.

The more experiences we hear the more informed we are to do the above.

But the people that offer their tuppance worth when it comes to quote are random home owners who don't know the first thing about quoting, costings or construction.

Agree that it's providing innacurate and false information but it gives a faint guestimate to a price.


Other than a "Ask A Tradesman" subsection it's not going to change.
I actually think having that as a section would be very helpful !:)
