Internet speed test

Hi I have been having problems with my internet speed. I usually test with test my.net or with Google which gives a speed of about 10Mbs.

Vodafone want me to send screen grabs from speed test.net
This result consistently gives a speed of 38Mbps.

Why is there such a difference and which is more accurate.

Btw they do all measure in Mbps and not MBps.

There are differences because they will use different servers to test your speed. Network congestion out there on the internet will affect your speed test results. You often get different results using the same test page at different times due to this. You can choose different servers on speedtest.net and this will affect the results by different amounts at different times of day.


I'm sure each result is pretty accurate but as the result will depend on which server the test is using and the internet conditions at the time on the route used between your computer and that server any result should be taken with a little pinch of salt.


Obviously the one that gives you the closest speed to the speed your ISP says you should get is the best!

Yes as network speeds are always measured in bits per second.

I use speedtest.net, formerly Ookla. You can pick where and what servers to use and that can sometimes to indicate that there is congestion in some parts of the network within the UK if you get slower speeds to certain areas.

testmy.net is useless as it "tests" for just a few seconds.

Google Speed Test actually came up with figures just under what speedtest.net reported for me but regardless I'd always advise speedtest.net over any other.

You are testing using a wired to the router connection I presume? Wifi is too variable for testing purposes. What issues have you been having?

As has been said, the speed depends on lots of factors not least of which is how busy the test server is.
A good reliable speed tester is Netflix's https://fast.com where the server and its connection to the internet will never be a factor in the results.

I choose 200MB size test on test my.net so it lasts for quite longer than a few seconds

Yes wired config. Running in safe mode.

Issues were initially that I would intermittently lose connection for a few minutes. They have since put in a new line and replaced the router but the speed has dropped to an extent where I can't always stream in full hd.

Ahh, I missed the option to run it for longer. I've just run it again however and it's connecting me to Dallas TX, I think earlier it was connecting elsewhere so it's pointless really. Use speedtest.net and register (it's free), that'll allow you to log runs at each time of the day and share the results with anyone.
