Internet speed test

Hi I have been having problems with my internet speed. I usually test with test my.net or with Google which gives a speed of about 10Mbs.

Vodafone want me to send screen grabs from speed test.net
This result consistently gives a speed of 38Mbps.

Why is there such a difference and which is more accurate.

Btw they do all measure in Mbps and not MBps.

Thanks

    I would use
    https://www.speedtest.net

    - by ookla, I use this daily, it is the one accepted by most ISP's, though not by BT which (of course) have their own. It will come up with one server, you can click "GO" for that or click on that name and look for one closer from a list you can scroll down. Yes, Mbps is correct and they should all measure like that.

I suspect Virgin are trying to fob you off.

the closest, least congested, going through the least amount of hops is the fastest.

There is a fiddle. The isp knows the majority of speed testing sites, so it is in their benefit not to traffic manage these, make their routing as fast as possible and let the information from them flow as free as possible. In this way they can get you to do a speed test which will show you have a brilliant connection, but traffic manage the rest of your data

    You could also use this:
    https://www.thinkbroadband.com/guides/fibre-fttc-ftth-broadband-guide

Either use "Test my Broadband" at the top, or "Broadband Speedtest" at the RH side, green box.

You are on Fibre, I take it? FTTC or direct to your house via a Virgin box? If so, you should definitely have a better download than 10Mbps.

Is it not speedtest.net that Virgin are asking him to use?

I find https://www.speedtest.net is fairly accurate.

You can confirm it by seeing how fast you can usually download files etc.
That's usually expressed in KB/s, so you multiply by 0.008 (8/1000) to get Mb/s.

Don't forget that when your testing your connection speed, you are also testing the speed of the connection between you and the speedtest site.

I get better results from a server that is over 60 miles from me, compared to 2 servers that are within 20 and 30 miles.

Better than any speed test site is to check the sync speed on the router. If the sync speed on the router is X, that is the maximum you could ever get on any website. So, if the speed there shows something like 10 Mbps, there's no need to test through websites as you will never get more than that.
