Last time we moved (2-bed to 3, but house pretty crammed, a lot of books) we hired a medium sized tail-lift (for washing machine, oven, etc) box van. Had three cars (ours and both in-laws and theirs). We were in our 20s, both very fit, and at the time I had recently been loading and unloading artics for my living, so was pretty strong.
That day's effort nearly killed us all, and we vowed NEVER, EVER to do it ourselves again.:D
(we also vowed we would never put anything in any loft again, 20-odd years later, our (larger) loft is now crammed with stuff, plus we have merged with another household and acquired a lot more books:o.)
This time, we have to have an overlap as we're getting a doer-upper. So we bought a van, and are shifting some things bit by bit as the house is ready for stuff, so we can clear our house here a bit to do have space to recarpet and repaint and fit a new kitchen to get the best price for it. The van will help with getting stuff for the refurb too. When this one is sold, though, we'll still get professionals to do the move of the heavy stuff, and things that have been left here to keep a base and make the house look nice. (Then we'll sell the van, should get most of our money back on it, so basically a nearly-free hire for several months:).)0 -
Probably depends where you are. We're in Scotland and moved two weeks ago using a removal company. We only moved 5 minutes away but total cost of them moving all our stuff (we had already boxed stuff up, dismantled beds etc) and unloading at the other side was £480. We had to pay for a full day as there were keys involved but if there hadn't been, we would have probably been half of that.
But let me tell you, the hassle and stress saved by using a company was worth every single penny!0 -
I know doing it yourself is Money saving, but using a removal company is relationship saving and sanity saving! I'm paying £500 to move five streets away...... Worth every penny!0

I’ve moved twice in the last 2 years. On both occasions we went for a local company with 5 star reviews. They were more expensive but as pensioners with umpteen years of belongings they were their weight in hold. We had a part pack, we did books and clothes, they did everything else.
One of the firms provided large padded covers for the furniture, TVs etc, that was a nice extra
Be aware, if you pack everything yourselves and something is broken it may not be covered by their insurance.0 -
In my part of the world (NE) a 2 bed house is 350-450, a 3 bed 550-700, thats 1 day, two trips in a Jumbo Luton Van inclusive of Vat and insurance. And thats providing eveything is boxed and ready to go.
The last two times I have been let down, 1st tried to squeeze another job into the day Id booked and ended up a farce, last one lost my appointment, and when he did turn up his van was knackered. This was a guy who did a great job 10 years previously which is why I used him.
How much, is only part of it. Go on RECENT reviews and recommendations too.0 -
Me and my partner have just bought our first home!
We are thinking of doing it alone.
We're in the process of packing up the house and come across 'Boxed Up'
Heard a lot of good things about them but I was wondering if anyone else has purchased from them and what there experience was like?0 -
Hey everyone,
Me and my boyfriend are moving from the UK to Spain in two months and I am considering using the services of a professional mover.
I was looking for a low-cost service on google when I came across this company European Moving. Has anyone used their service? They look decent ...:huh:0 -
There's a lot of things that can affect the cost of moving - one of the main one is distance, which you didn't mention. It doesn't sound like you have too much stuff so it shouldn't be on the high end there unless you have a safe or piano or something. The easiest way to find out is to call a mover and get an estimate. I think they mostly give quotes for free and they're specific to what you need so you'll get a better idea of the total. I know a-1 auto transport gives free estimates (they're a car and home moving company). You might try them to get a concrete price.0

I hired 2 men and a van at £50/hour to take my boxed stuff and little furniture 8 miles from a 2 bed house into a 20'x10' storage container where they could pull up alongside it. Patio doors of house to the rear of their van was about 40'.
If I'd have had proper furniture and white goods it'd have added a max of an hour onto that.
They did it in 3 hours, so bill was £150. It was a square "box van" with a capacity of just over 100 sq ft. I knew it'd be a single trip as I'd culled so much stuff.
Things to think about with man/van:
1/ a huge big old sheet where they're stepping inside in case it rains as you're going to have to clear up those damp footprints...
2/ remind them "I packed all this myself, so please make sure you hold boxes underneath so the bottoms don't drop out".
You'd be surprised how thoughtless some man/van services are about details. You have to "think for them" sometimes.
Knowing how quick my move was I'd prefer to pay by the hour so they don't rush if there's a problem.... e.g. I had a canvas wardrobe upstairs I'd built upstairs and it wouldn't fit down the stairs... it took about 10 minutes to get that taken apart, which they did properly as they're paid on time ... and so weren't gung-ho and trying to force it.0
