Money Moral Dilemma: Should our friends pay for part of our holiday?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
They've asked if we'd like to go on holiday with them. We’ve given the dates we're free but the only weeks they can travel are more expensive. Is it OK to ask them to pay the difference, given we could've gone for a cheaper deal?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value.

  • Either compromise or just explain that you can't afford it / wish not to fork out extra. I don't think it's fair to expect someone else to pay for your holiday. Consider what you want more, a holiday with friends, or to save some money.
  • No absolutely not!

You can politely decline and tell them that those weeks are out of budget for you, or you can agree and pay yourselves.

Why have you even put forward the option of weeks you can’t afford?

No. If you're holidaying together, you find a date that suits everyone. The fact that it is cheaper on a date that only suits one of the couples is irrelevant.
  • No its not ok.

If you can't afford it you can't havi it in my book.
I know a teacher who can only have holidays at expensive times. If I want to holiday with them then I would expect to pay top prices
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

No, but an alternative is to ask to see if you can work a way to diy it. Maybe go for 5 days instead of 7, depending on flight prices, look at self catering instead of ai (there ain’t many places you can’t eat well for similar to at home prices and can get value for money. Same with booze - pick up some duty free. Holidays are as cheap or expensive as you want them to be

Imagine someone suggesting you pay even more for the pleasure of their company on your holiday !

Get lost - right friends you are !
  • No, of course not. You should just tell them it is sadly out of your budget range and hopefully next time you could find a date that suits everyone.
If they then offer to pay as they want you so much to share it, you can take a view on whether you would feel comfortable with that
