A pair of tan coloured tights from my then boyfriend's sister. At the time I wore stockings and not tights anyway and I wouldn't have been seen dead in tan coloured ones (grey or black was in fashion as the time!). I just think that if you don't know someone very well then you should buy bubble bath or chocolates, but a pair of tights???

One sock from a friend with Alzheimers. It was beautifully wrapped though and she did see the funny side.

We've just been in the US and I got talking with the woman at the car hire place. Her mother-in-law gave her toilet rolls for Christmas! When I asked if the MIL was going senile she said, "No, she's just mean".

The most disappointing present I received was from my parents - I must have been about 11 at the time, a VATman calculator! I was and still am hopeless at maths so I guess they thought they were being helpful - all I really wanted was a French dictionary (much more useful!). Ohhh... I can picture it now.

The best present I ever had was for my birthday when my partner gave me £100 cash to spend in one day in London, I managed it but it was quite difficult.

mine isint as bad as everyone elses but i was still gutted when i got it, my boyfriend gave me a huge present on xmas morning to open infront of his whole family....it turned out to be a playstation! i was 20 at the time and had never played on a playstation in my entire life...still havent! lol what made him decide i would like that is beyond me, i swear he got it so he could use it. he made up for it by throwing a private fireworks party for me and him on my 21st though so i'll let him off!

My Mother in law gave me a 36 wooden clothes pegs AND a packet of chewing gum for my first married xmas, things havent really improved over the twenty years since, and its not because they dont have much money.
I try not to take it personally though.

Just remember - it says more about her than it does about you...!
  • 2 size 20 flowery t-shirts from bon marche (i'm size 12) from my MIL.

A cardboard box from my great aunt filled with torn up newspaper, a packet of custard powder, some toothpaste, hotel toiletry minis and the fronts of old christmas cards for me to make into gift tags I presume!!!

Thankfully she didn't like me very much. She adored my sister and gave her petticoats made from army blankets with bunnies stitched on the front.

The worst bit was we were expected to write and thank her!
