What are my rights? We need to cancel a trip to Mexico as I cannot travel there due to pregnancy.

My husband surprised me with a special holiday to Mexico to celebrate a special birthday.
We were both being surprised to find we were expecting a new arrival in August.
We arranged a trip to our local Thomas Cook store to seek advice from their travel “experts” With their support we moved our holiday a week earlier so we would return in June rather than July giving us a good month and a half before baby’s arrival. This amendment to cost us £100 for administration fees. The reason for our amendment was made very clear that it was due to pregnancy.

Thankfully a friend informed me about zikka Virus and the effects it can have an on unborn children. The government health site confirms pregnant women should not should not travel to these zones.
We are so disappointed neither of the two travel agents we spoke to mentioned this risk. For us to cancel our holiday it will cost us £250 each. We do not want to amend our holiday further as we do not have confidence in the company.
We have travel insurance however we have yet to inform them of the change of dates for travel with the added complication we will not be travelling at all.
I am wondering if we have any consumer rights to prevent us from losing £600
Thanks in advance for your comments

although an old article (Zika has been around for a while) I suspect this may still be accurate

Amazing how many people are surprised to be pregnant. I'm pretty sure insurance won't help.0

It would be reasonable to ask Thomas Cook to exchange this holiday for one at a safe destination rather than cancel altogether. You could argue that the staff in the shop had a duty of care that they failed to fulfill when you changed the holiday dates and told them about the pregnancy.0

As Voyager says change to another destination.
I don't think the shop staff can be held responsible, many people visit Mexico while pregnant I'm sure.
Plenty other options, why cancel?0 -
Also be aware that many airlines will require a doctors certificate for flying late in pregnancy. Moving only a week earlier may not be sufficient, talk to your doctor, not the travel agency in the first instance0

I think it's unreasonable to expect travel agent staff to give advice on health issues.
There is something called personal responsibility.
The same goes for advice on visas or other entry requirements.
I don't think travel insurance would cover this.0 -

We all know its only Voyage Prive that cause pregnancies anyway....0

Why on earth would you choose to take a long haul flight to a hot country when you are seven months pregnant?
I hope you are traveling business class. At least you will have some comfort on the plane.0
