    You're in NI aren't you?

In England, most pre 1914 terraced houses (of which there must be millions) don't have garages. Most apartment blocks, 1 bed and many 2 bed houses built after 1945 also don't have garages and there are hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of those. Most local authority built houses don't have garages.

The majority of 3 and more bedroomed semi detached and detached houses will have or have had garages. There is an increasing trend to convert integral garages into extra living space or extend the house into the space formerly occupied by the garage. But even those who have a garage rarely use it for the car, the garage often being full of junk, or it's just too much effort to open the doors and drive in, then close the doors etc.

Forgot to add that, because of the width of the modern car, many garages have doors that are too narrow or the garage itself is too narrow to comfortably open the door.

It was a poke directly at Owen Money thats all. :)

Thats right, poke fun at the poor man who cant afford a garage

  • I used to live in a house with a large enough garage to store the car. The newer house is better, more modern but the garage isn't large enough for any modern vehicle.

I use an absorbent pad (it has those moisture pellets that come with shoes but about 500g worth) for demisting.

For ice, I normally use tepid water but then you have flick the wipers quick enough that the water doesn't freeze! These days I use a windscreen cover.

I found de-icing sprays would melt the ice on the outside but cause any mist or fogging on the inside to freeze.

    Another vote for lukewarm water.

De-icer? Costs more, takes me longer - useful to have stashed in with the spare wheel for emergency, in practice never gets used.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one using the available technology, it makes life so much easier.

I mean in this day and age why are people still using hot water to clear the screen, its not 1985?
Because they don't have cars with that technology obviously.

Windscreen cover night before, if I forget then luke warm water.

Inside, engine running, air con on and wait (I miss my old car with the windscreen heaters).
  • I cover up the windscreen, with a proper but rather tatty cover, although bubble wrap works well too. Then I make sure I don't have to get up early by working from home (when I work) and lie in bed listening to the neighbours' early morning scraping.

When I lived in the Alps I occasionally had to deal with digging a bit as well, even living in a valley bottom, and making sure the soft broom was outside the car to get the 30cm plus off vehicle itself. Still, no real complaints there, it meant skiing would be good! We have it easy really.
