Anticipation (allow yourself more time in the morning) and patience (while the button on the dash does its thing). Cost nothing.

I keep a 2 litre milk bottle full of water next to a radiator overnight. In the morning its warm enough to de-ice without shocking windows.

Use the aircon to defog the inside once the heater is warm enough to melt the ice.

Another vote for only slightly warm, tepid water - works well for a mild frost, but if it's a really hard frost and it's still well below freezing then I don't think you can avoid scraping as water and deicers tend to refreeze.

Oh and a windscreen demister - only cost a couple of quid, like a soft tilying pad on a long, extending handle so you can wipe the inside windscreen easily.

Just put newspaper on the boys window (he's working at 3).
Personally, I jump in and start the car, hit the front and rear screen heaters (and the heated seat), then scrape the side windows.
Jump back in the car and clear the windscreen/rear window using the wipers.

For 36 years, I've used a kettle of boiling water. Not had a cracked screen yet.

Me too. Exactly that. I sometimes run the hot tap and fill a 5 litre container and pour that over all the windows.
