A quick update to say thanks to everyone for the help.

I now have my new phone and some photos/contacts came over from whattsapp, but texts and most contacts did not move over. Only 8 were on the sim.

So a lesson learnt the hard way. I guess I knew the battery was on it's way out but kept putting things off. Too much charging blew it.

If your replacement phone is a Samsung set up a Samsung account on it and it'll back up contacts, text messages etc and you can also set up security options such as find my phone and remote lock and wipe should it get stolen or lost. You can set Android phones to have them upload any photos you take automatically to your Google account.
