Barclaycard unexpectedly sending me a new card

Apologies if this is already discussed elsewhere. I did search the forum but couldn't find anything.

Earlier this week, Barclaycard sent me a text message and an email saying that I will be receiving a new card within the next few days.

This was unexpected, as the existing card has an expiry date over a year away.

Is this part of some wider programme of card replacements, or have they picked up on some activity on the account that they don't like?

I'm slightly worried, because I have held the card for many years (since it was Egg Money) and haven't made any unusual transactions recently. The only thing I have done recently is change my Verified-by-Visa password, but I didn't have any trouble doing that and the new password works.

Sometimes it is nothing that you have done that triggers a replacement card it could be that your card number has been found on a list of card numbers that has been for example obtained in a data breach - all the cards on that list will then be replaced
  • Nothing to worry about. Just use the new card and chop up the old one.
  • You'd be better off contacting Barclaycard to ask why.

"We're doing this as part of our on-going monitoring and constant protection of your account" followed by a link to a web page with some generic information.

I doubt I'll get any more than that out of them to be honest.
  • I would just put it down to an error from Barclaycard as the same thing thing happened to me last year with my MBNA Everyday Amex card. Despite having nearly 2 years validity left on the card, they sent me a new Amex card out of the blue. When I queried this , they said they issued new cards by mistake to some customers however i should destroy the old card and begin to use the new one - it had the full 3 years validity. Though a few weeks later they sent me a letter saying they were changing from Amex to Visa so a few months later they sent me a Visa Everyday catd with exactly the same perks as the Amex.

The replacement card has a different card number. Mildly annoying because my house insurance is about to auto-renew using the old card number, so I'll have to phone them up and give them the new number now.

They did this to me back in December, when I rang to ask why, they said if I had ever used the card to purchase anything from Ticketmaster in the past they were issuing all customers with new cards due to the security breach. Halifax also did the same back in November, my guess is Barclaycard are just slow.

  • They changed the design of the Platinum cards - old was white and new is black/grey. I read in an email they would send the new design out to current Platinum card holders.

They don't usually send out card redesigns - you usually get one once your card expires or you have to request a new card

I had a "Lloyds TSB" credit card when the two banks split. It changed into a Lloyds credit card, but they didn't bother to send me a new card with just "Lloyds" written on it instead of Lloyds TSB.
