Didn't the Tories slash all sorts of budgets drastically, yet still somehow managed to grow the deficit at the largest rate in recent history? What did they do with all the money?

There's a large element of "penny wise pound foolish" or lack of thought about side effects, since a lot of the austerity measures ended off costing more in the long run. We supposedly spent more in dealing with overturned benefits claims than we saved by outsourcing that effort.

Would Labour have done better? I honestly can't see how they'd have managed to do worse.

The deficit peaked in the last year of the last Labour Government.

I can’t disagree with your description of how the scorched earth policy the Government applied to some government departments was disastrous, the MOJ spent millions on jettisoning experienced Prison Officers and have subsequently spent millions on overtime payments and trying to recruit staff to reestablish a semblance of control back in prisons in England and Wales. You won’t be surprised to hear that Grayling was the genius in charge during this time.

We probably had the most painless recession/correction in history.

Far from over. We are still in phase one a decade on.

Clearing obsolete books to make place for new ones not a bad thing, especially when people mostly read on iPads nowadays

Book burning is for people who don't want to learn from history.

If you don't believe it, look at the history of book burning!

OK Arky, we've gleaned you think you're smarter than the average leave voter. Trouble is, votes are not weighted to favour the wishes of your average terminally entitled liberal.
    Suck it up.

Maybe he's just smarter than people who voted to leave the EU to punish the Scots for a domestic UK government policy?

Libraries are elitist and out of touch.

Reading made civilisation, mayonnaise. And the internet, come to that.

    Besides which, it's an analogy.
