I have a hair dresser who comes to my house, she cuts mine, my hubbys and two kids hair for £20.

I went to a training salon, three times, the 1st time was great, the 2nd OK, the 3rd I came out having been neatly scalped within an inch of my life! When I queried (during the cut) it looks a bit short! The stylist said "didn't you want it short" I said "yes, but if I wanted a Skin Head I would have asked for a No. 1 with the clippers"! Moral of the story, be very clear about what your want and ask at what level the trainee is!

I wouldn't cut ladies hair as the techniques are so different.
That's interesting, wouldn't you have done a straightforward trim even?

If the hair had been cut about six to eight weeks prior then yes I could follow the previous cut.
The technique for cutting mens hair is completely different to ladies. Now it is becoming more unisex, but the way I was taught was very traditional. We work with a lot shorter hair where there is no room for error. Modern short hair for alot of people now days is clippers all over.

  • I go to the local college where they run hairdressing courses to get mine cut. Last time I had a highlight and cut and blow dry which took 3 hours (have very thick hair and hadn't had it cut for about a year - shameful I know) and at times I had more than one attendee. Very well supervised and cost me a measley £11 plus petrol there and back.

Money saving tip: The shorter you cut your hair the less often you have to visit the barbers. :D

I'm Spanish, lived in the UK for 9 years and never been to a UK salon in my life. They are so expensive that for the price of a haircut and some highlights you can fly to Spain, get your hair done and come back (not joking) In Spain I would pay approximately £30 for a haircut and highlights, so if you are planning to go to Spain on holidays, don't get your hair done before you go, wait and do it while you are there...

Whilst on holiday in France last month my wife decided to have her hair cut and highlighted. The establishment was even smarter than the fashionable place she usually spends our life savings. I was totally unco-operative and refused to help and left my wife to deal with the stylist with no common language.

Usually after having spent an obscene amount of money, she tells me that they have made such a good job, that it is a wonderful cut, and that she could not possibly go anywhere cheaper. Whereas I cannot see any significant difference to the way she looked before the cut..

But this time despite a total lack of common language her hair looked really great, she looked happy, and the cost was less than a third of what she pays here.

Whilst the saving will not pay for a trip to France it could tip the balance in favour of a weekend away once or twice a year.

Now this isn't the most glamorous hairdressers in the world but on Doncaster High Street, men can get a cut or trim for £3 and Ladies for £4.
  • Surly, even though women’s hair dresses are generally more expensive, a one off payment of say £40 is cheaper than a man would have paid in a year. I know this is a controversial question and I’m sure most or some women get there her cut more than once a year, nevertheless, if you work it out I pay £8 per month to get mine cut that’s £96 a year. That’s £56 more expensive.

I know I’m going to get hammered for mentioning this, but what’s the point in being controversial.
  • I'm sure for some it's cheaper but what I know of my other halfs expenditure it's not true for us. I stopped asking about the exact cost a long time ago as it scares me too much to ask. But ...

About £60 for a wash, cut, colour, styling thingy session. This is about one per 3 months. So about £240 a year.

I get mine cut at the local hairdressers for £9 per session which is still only £180 over the year. But the again I don't get mine cut every month as the speed of growth is different in Winter and I like it a little longer outside of summer.

I believe she's found somewhere a little cheaper now but it's not much different.
... and that's all I have to say about that.
  • Wow! That’s a lot. I’m a slap-head myself that’s one reason I get my hair cut so often + my work entails me to keep it short and tidy.

Why do women’s hair dressers charge so much? Is it because as I have assumed that they too assume that women don’t get their hair so often? Some like to keep it quite short and I’m sure that they must get their hair cut quite frequently and that is when the cost add up. These charges can’t be right. This business of hair dressing sounds to me to be biased against women.
