You are aware that BG will typically quote you 40% more than a local independent GSR RGI for a new install? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

an ECO grant for a new boiler where I would pay £240 towards the cost of a new boiler.matelodave wrote: »even if it saves you £200 a year on your gas bill it'll take seven and ahalf years to pay back.
Not quite sure why everybody's dismissed the ECO grant. The new boiler could cost you only £40?! So is £240 correct and what would Eon actually fit?If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
Totally agree. Stay away from British gas. We got quoted over £4000 to fit a new boiler so called a local company. Their quote was £1800 for the exact same boiler but they told me i might be entitled to it for free under a government scheme. They filled the paperwork in for me & hey presto. I got a complete new boiler fitted for nothing. Obviously i give the engineers a good tip.

You can find a price here to compare with other companies if you don't qualify

Unfortunately the old boiler will not light tonight. The pilot lights and I keep my finger on the button for 3 minutes and it just goes out. So I have emailed a local engineer to have a look at it and also to get a quote from British Gas to see if they will fit a regular boiler (W Bosch Greenstar) as that may be an expensive boiler but it will mean minimum disruption to my pipework.
Just to give you an idea of what's involved, have a look at this

Of course, this work can only be carried out by a GasSafe engineer.
The part is less than £10.0 -

A gas safe fitter is not required to replace an external thermocouple on your own boiler, which is an electrical item in the same way that neither a gas safe fitter or an electrician is required to connect a room stat to your boiler.0 -
Guys I also want the gas valve replaced as it has been in there 30 years and has a limited life and have the spare parts. Got the thermocouple off the internet and gas valve a few years back but gas valve will need someone gas safe. Have booked in with local engineer but 21st is the first available appts.0

Well, according to post #16, it looks like you're OK to at least replace the thermocouple yourself.
If that will get your boiler working, then it's worth doing!0 -
If you do go for a Worcester Bosch boiler, have a look on their website for local accredited installers, you may get an extra warranty doing it that way too.
My installation was 60% of the price that British Gas.0 -

My boiler so old that the thermocouple is internal to the burners and not like the youtube video so I reckon its a gas safe jobby as you have to disconnect the gas pipe and slide out the burner tray to get access.0 -
It seems my boiler is so old the Gas Council number (41-505-82) has fell off google. I bought a gas valve about 5 years ago using that above number.0
