    Hello Malc,
May we ask for general advice?
We've just moved into flat and made a smooth move to E.ON.
The gas meters for each floor were recently moved out of each flat into a lobby area for each floor, and nearly all are now smart.
The electric smart meter is dated 2015 and, along with a Trilliant hub, is fitted in the hall. The Triillant HAN light is flashing every second along with an quiet but unpleasant alternating high frequency noise. We don't have a smart home so don't see the point of the Trilliant device. Do smart meters themselves need the hub?
Another question. My normally level-headed partner says his head hurts each time he goes into the hall cupboard and gets close to the devices. Can we have them removed or disabled?
    All advice gratefully received. Thxs.

Hello LisbonLaura and hope the move went well.

Smart meters need the hub to communicate. The electricity meter stores, sends and receives information. The gas meter sends readings to the electricity meter and the electricity meter sends information to the In Home Display and back to us. The Communications Hub allows this to happen across the smart meter home area network (HAN) and connects these devices to the Data Communications Company (DCC) using the wide area network (WAN).

The DCC provides the communications infrastructure that handles the UK's smart meter data.

Smart meters have gone through rigorous safety testing and have exceeded every UK and EU safety standard. For instance, exposure to radio waves from smart meters is well within guideline limits and lower than from WiFi or mobile phones. Public Health England have confirmed they see no health risks from smart meters. Unless faulty, we wouldn't be looking to remove smart meters. Similarly, disabling the Communications Hub is something else we wouldn't do.

Hope this explains LisbonLaura. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

  • Clear explanation fully understood Malc. Thxs! :)
We think it must be the high frequency alternating noise that is getting to the male.
One solution would be for me to get the vacuum cleaner out of the errant cupboard, then pass it to him :)

Q:- Should that red HAN light be flashing every second though?

The move back to Blighty has gone far better than anticipated

    Best wishes

    Hi Malc
I am a E.ON customer and finally had SMETS2 gas and electric meters installed last week - I'm in the North of Scotland. On the first day, i had no issues getting both electric & gas usage on the IHD, but the gas no longer works - pressing the gas/electric toggle on the IHD has no effect.

My question is, is this an issue with the IHD or has the gas smart meter stopped communicating with the electric smart meter? When i called your support team, they said its an issue affecting all SMETS2 gas meter customers on North England/Scotland. However AFAIK the gas meter does NOT communicate with the DCC network, it simply sends readings to the electric meter and its the comms hub on the electric meter which communicates with the DCC.

Looking at my E.ON account online, i can see the electric readings are being sent automatically but nothing for the gas, other than the opening reading submitted by the installer.

The gas & electric meters are only a few meters apart and I can get readings directly from the gas meter as well as costs etc

Would appreciate it if you could shed some light on this.

    Cheers

The gas meter is coded onto the electricity meter so that they work as a pair. In your case I would guess that your installation has dropped the coding for the gas meter . Such are the mysterious machinations of the cranky new smart metering system. I would suggest an electronic rocket up the rear of the supply company would be in order, they are obviously not being communicated your usage.

Hello pete-20-11 and you're right. Smart meters are optional.

The T&Cs on your Fix Online Exclusive v6 (section 11.1) say you agree to be contacted about having smart meters fitted. You can turn these offers down and stay on your chosen tariff. The relevant part of the T&C is as follows.

With this tariff you agree to be contacted during the tariff term for the installation of a smart meter.

I'm sorry you're unhappy with the contact you've received about smart meters. As I've mentioned above, you might want to take advantage of an opt-out. This won't stop contact about smart meters altogether as we've a regulatory duty to offer these meters to all our customers and to make aware them aware of any significant developments with the roll out. It will slow down the frequency of contact. I posted more about this on 31 October 19 (#145).

I've added your post to the feedback I've been sending to those here responsible for these communications.

Many thanks for your feedback pete-20-11.

    Malc

How slow will this contact level be?

In the last couple of days I’ve had a text message and today an email saying I must book an appointment as the smart meters are compulsory on my tariff,

Are you able to advise on the above & possible solutions?

I have a Landis Gyr E470 Type 5394 SMETS2 smart meter and will be looking to change electricity supplier in the year year and at present, E.ON is showing the best value on comparisons site.

If i switched to E.ON, will my meter retain its smart functionality? Would i need a new IHD unit? (Currently have SSE one) and more importantly, if i choose Monthly readings for my smart meter, do they actually show up on my account so I can view as with SSE, it fails to show and i just se @Estimated@ which defeats the purpose and it seems although they confirm they have received readings, the website doesn't show and only way is to get readings every 30 minutes which I don't want, i just want 1 reading each month and then have it show online to give me a guide to my cost each month & bill etc.

Current contract runs out in March so just starting to get an idea of my options now.

    Many thanks

Hello MothballsWallet and thanks for the update.

I'm sorry our Complaint Manager ignored your request to be contacted in writing.

We do use 0345 numbers in various areas including complaints and smart meters.

    Malc
That's fine, Malc, it's just that no voicemail message was left.

By the way, I also received another email about smart meters being compulsory on my tariff when I know they're not, so this might be another complaint I'll have to file.

There's a reason why I asked to be contacted in writing - it is forbidden where I work to take/make personal calls (except during lunch break) which is why I was disappointed that the request was ignored/missed.

Just like magic, my gas smets2 meter is now communicating with the comms hub/electric meter and gas readings are being submitted to E.ON automatically...pheeeeew! Was almost beginning to regret having smart meters installed as automatic submission of readings were the main reason why I opted to get them installed. Happy days
