BT Broadband speed below what they promised

BT are charging me for super fast broadband which is meant to be a minimum of 12mb speed download, I am currently getting 4mb speed.

I do not want to cancel I just want them to give me a better service but they fail to cooperate.

I live in an area called Toomebrige in N.Ireland but I am connected to an exchange in a different town called Ahoghill. My brother lives 2 miles away and he is connected to the Toomebridge server and he receives 60mbs.

No other internet provides in my area and I just want the same service that I'm paying the same as everyone else for.

Can someone help please?

If you have only just joined give it time for the line to " stabilise "
When I joined i was getting 59mb. two years later and I was getting 76mb

    It's not "promised" it's a "suggested " maximum possible.

They do state a " minimum guaranteed speed "
If it falls below this, they are obliged to take action and fix it.
  • You have the right to complain, and even cancel without Penalty if Ofcom agrees that your download speed is far lower than what you've been promised.

Before you do anything, its worth looking into how you can boost your broadband speed.

    1. Check that your Wi-Fi is secure. Sometimes people can be logged in without your permission.
    2. Try moving your router.
    3. Try a power adapter. This boosts the wifi signal if it is weak.

Have you been on the cheaper ASDL package before rather than "fibre".
You may find its slightly quicker in your case!

Put your phone number into this

    https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

and see what it says the speed you should be getting.

If the sped that you are getting is below the handback threshold, then you should be able to leave penalty free.

All testing should be done with a hardwired Ethernet connection and with your router connected to the test port on the master socket.

The dsl checker site gives more useful information in terms of the actual "Observed speeds". These are the speeds that the line is actually syncing at, which is useful for finding out where any issue lies.

Once again i suggest your BT Members help page Community Forum .
Post a clear concise message .
Your actual problem not what somebody else gets .
You may get a top level CS involved.

I have BT fibre up to 52 meg .
But cannot get above 42 meg and thats due to the quality of the line from the cabinet.
