  • Well to me it looks very cold and unwelcoming. All those hard floors, and hard landscaping outside. Not a shred of comfiness. I mean I don't know the market or how houses that sold were presented, but for me, I wouldn't look at it.

I agree with this, it looks very 'dull'

Simple things giving a pop of colour, new cushions in a bright colour, just something bright in each room would help.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

People are just looking at price for size and location, not cushions, they can brighten a place themselves if they buy it. Banks are being a lot more cautious as well.

Exactly this. When mine was.on the market, became quite obsessed making it tidy, did everything from making it homely to decluttering, staging it, even stalking viewers Facebook page, when I saw one person mention their favourite book, had it strategically placed so the buyer would think it was fate (desperate I know, but it did work and she made an offer, but later pulled out due to change in circumstances)!

Tried every sort of thing to sell it, guess when it sold? The weekend after we had moved out! Empty, looking very sorry for itself, grass not been mown for three weeks and marks on wall where sofa and furniture has been etc.

If people are interested in it, the decor, mirrors, pictures and cushions will become irrelevant. When I viewed the house we bought, it stunk of dog wee, had some of the biggest cobwebs I've ever seen and layers of dust and grime. I could see past that though ...

While I appreciate what you're saying, if I remember correctly, the house you bought has some hard to replicate features in it's plot and surroundings, just like mine.

When there's a USP, or several of them, people are willing to look past the surface features, as you and I did, but when there isn't anything special, staging may help.

Of course, anyone can create a USP, by revising their price downwards to the right level.
  • I think this is a personal taste thing - looks fine to me, very clean and tidy :)

One person's "comfy" is another's "cluttered".

Absolutely agree, I love the inside of the house. I'm not one for flounces and frills. Not so struck on how overlooked it is, but I suppose that is to be expected on new estates.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Yes, short of serious structural problems most people can bring a house up to the level of decor that suits them, good photos that show the actual space available are better than loads of staged pics with fluffy cushions and guitars etc. clogging the place up.
