It's a problem with automatics as it turns off whilst in drive with the break depressed. My wife has a Kia Sorento automatic - when you stop at a roundabout it turns off the engine and there's enough delay when trying to pull away from the roundabout to be dangerous.
It can be turned off manually at the beginning of each trip, but that's still a pain. Can't be permanently turned off on the Kia.
My car is auto (not a KIA admittedly) , hold the brake for 2 secs to activate it, as you touch the accelerator the car starts and away you go, there is a button to deactivate it.0 -
never had a car with this on. Now looking for a new16/17/18 car and most seem to have this. Sitting in a traffic jam, move a few yards each time for an hour. Surely this is a pain !? How many started motors would you get through ? Any experience please. Can this be disabled ??
The idea is to wait until a bigger gap has appeared, rather than roll forward barely a car length every time. You're not going anywhere fast, so there's no need to be on the bumper of the next car. In another thread it was suggested that you need to be stopped for about 8 seconds to save fuel over restarting.
They tend to re-engage pretty quickly now (unless you try to move off just as it stops), and can usually be disabled from a button on the dash. I'd recommend leaving it on and see how you get on first.
I didn't like the idea at first, but now I find it kind of weird when I stop and the engine keeps running.0 -
Not sure why anyone would experience a delay when entering a roundabout, unless your cars work differently to my Fiesta, either you are in gear with the cluthc depressed ready to go (engine running) or in neutral (engine stopped) and the engine will restart as soon as the clutch is depressed. I've never experienced any delay at a roundabout due to stop/start.
No driver operated clutch on the car I tested, can't say I liked automatic transmission without a torque converter either.0 -
I have a Skoda Superb and i can turn it of if required.0

I have this on my Octavia and I got used to it very quickly. Makes no difference to your driving at all. Never once been annoyed by it so I have stuck with it rather than switching off. I assumed it did something useful with reducing emissions though….0

A bit weird at first but you get used to it, just like when I moved up from 4 to 5 gears then again to 6. If sitting in slow moving stop start I just press the button. Those having problems need to look at their driving technique and not be one of those annoying people sitting on the footbrake at traffic lights.0

Part of me thinks it should be compulsory on all cars. I live near a school and a fair proportion of waiting parents leave the engine running for 1/2 hour just to keep the car warm or cold. Presumably the congestion they cause isn't enough so they need to pointlessly pollute as well.
Its also annoying how many car drivers leave the engine running while presumably on their lunch break. I've walked past cars in supermarket car parks with the engine running, spent 40 minutes shopping then returning to my car their engine is still running!0 -
Cars that have start/stop have bigger batteries and beefed up starters & flywheels.
The average time is 7 seconds idling, after which you consume more petrol than if the engine was switched off.

nah, not sure I believe above> How does it work by the way. If there is no movement of the wheels for a while, the engine stops - yes, or is it if there is no pressure on the accelerator ?? Or is it if neutral is selected ?
Suppose I was on a very steep hill ... I am using the accelerator, it is in gear but I am not moving... wheels are not turning.
Would it cut out then ?0 -
"It's a problem with automatics as it turns off whilst in drive with the break depressed. My wife has a Kia Sorento automatic "
so YOU have to select neutral for it to restart ? (It wouldn't start in D would it?)0
